There are shows filmed in NYC (Law and Order) CSINY. There are shows from Phoenix (Medium) There are others. Like movies - we have a lot of films down here in Arizona. Proposal was filmed in part in Sitka, Alaska
TV shows, too, are usually filmed in L.A. even when they take place somewhere else.
"House" is supposed to be set in NJ. However, there must be no one from NJ on the writing team, because they make a lot of factual errors about NJ. Still, I like the show.
As someone pointed out, the actors and other necessary players in the industry are in L.A., the weather is usually cooperative--would make no sense to film everything on location.
Never has NYC been more relevant in TV and film than it is now. Tons of tv shows and films are shot in the city each and every day. CSI:NY, while taking advatage of the city for some shots and scenes, is primarily shot in LA.
The LA Times newspaper puts out a list each Monday, I believe, that shows the LA metropolitan area and what television shows/movies/commercials are being filmed for that week in certain areas. It's quite an extensive list. Most everything, (NOT everything but most everything), network television-wise, is filmed in LA minus a few local shots to remind you that it's supposed to be Miami (CSI) or Phoenix (Medium) or NJ (House), etc etc etc.
well if by "take place in" you mean where is the script set...i'd say new york #1, L.A. #2 and probably D.C. at number three simply because of all the political/war movies that get made.
If by "take place in" you mean where are they filmed It's Los Angeles #1, New York #2, and Shreveport, LA as #3.
If you look up the BEST places to make movies Alburqurque, NM is #1, L.A. is #2 and Shreveport, LA is #3, with NY,NY being #4.
I think Barry Levinson has also done a fair amount of movies set in Baltimore. Was "Diner" set in Baltimore?
