Well, after pages and pages of fighting I've concluded that somewhere along the way being multicultural automatically makes a place cultured. Who knew?

This thread appears due for a reminder about the following section of the TOS:

Quote:
Be civil, no personal attacks, flaming, or insults. We may attack ideas (politely) but we do not attack the speaker of the idea. Be careful with your words, there is a point where being direct crosses a line into blunt, in-your-face hostility. Please, report bad posts instead of engaging in flame wars on the boards. Insulting another member or a moderator will not be tolerated anywhere on this website. This includes Direct Messages and Reputation Comments.

If you disagree with something, say so, but explain WHY.
The topic here is what makes YOU cultured, not what makes someone else uncultured. Be careful when offering an opinion on the latter, because it might be viewed as an insult. Either don't take that chance or make it very clear that insulting is not your intention.

OK, some REAL definitions of "cultured" from dictionary.com:

1. "the cultivation of microorganisms, as bacteria, or of tissues, for scientific study, medicinal use, etc."

2. "the act or practice of cultivating the soil; tillage."

3. "the raising of plants or animals, esp. with a view to their improvement."

I would own most of you on two and three.

Having experienced multiple diverse cultures does not make one cultured.
Having walked through various museums and art galleries does not make one cultured.

Last warning for this thread. Post about yourself, not whether someone else is cultured.

I think a cultured person is one who is has a well rounded education.
It can be in a multitude of different areas.

You don't have to travel to a distant land to know something about it. That's a bonus is you have to opportunity to do so but it's not necessary.
Same with museums.
Good manners is a must.
Having an open mind is a must....a closed mind can no longer learn.

Agreed. To have a real knowledge and understanding of culture or other cultures is cultured. So in some cases a self-educated person in Kansas might be more cultured than a college graduate in Queens.
