Why do some states still have frontal license plates? Is it really necessary? Seems like doing away with them would be one way the state could save a few bucks. Although I suppose it wouldn't be a significant amount.

I think it makes sense to have an identifier on the front and back end of a vehicle. The front end is the only side a pedestrian may see before being run over, for example.

What are they going to do, lift the imprint off the body to get the number? Sure not going to take the time to read and memorize a plate number before getting run over, if you have time to do that, you have time to get the heck out of the way.

Perhaps after the incident a hypnotist can help you recall the tag # if you saw it for only a fraction of a second.

Thats actually been done before.....
But I always wished VA didn't have front plates. NC doesn't for example.
I think most southern states don't require them (I could be wrong).

Perhaps it is easier for a hidden camera at intersection to photograph a front plate for ticketing purposes.

Yeah, neither AL or FL has them. Front plates (we call them tags down here) are okay on a pickup, but they're ugly as hell on many cars.

Pennsylvania doesn't require front plates. PA is the only northeastern state without front plates if I am correct.
