My wife and I are an interracial couple looking for cities on the east coast that have an Austin, TX vibe. This is our criteria (in no particular order):
1. Liberal, open minded to interracial couples, gays, different cultures
2. creative, funky independently owned shops, restaurants, not alot of chains
3. reasonable housing prices (250,000 - 400,000 3br 2bath)
4. cool, vibrant downtown
5. decent size city, not a small town (750,000 and up)
6. moderate crime
7. teaching jobs (We are both teachers)
8. moderate climate

Can anyone offer us some suggestions?
Are you talking about 750 in the metro area or the actual city?
Chapel Hill, NC would be good for you. It only has about 55,000 people, but is in the Raleigh metro (1.4 mil.).

Are you currently in Austin,TX?? Do you have teaching jobs there? WHY are you leaving? Can you help me get a teaching job there? My wife and I are inter-racial/cultural as well, and looking to relocate to Houston/Austin/San Antonio.
In answer to you question, there is no place that I can suggest with absolute certainty, especially with the teaching job criteria you listed. If there were, we would already be there, and not stuck in Michigan. The best I have heard is the growing area of NC: Raleigh, Charlotte, etc.
HAPPY HUNTING..let us know what you find...maybe we'll end up there as well!
No, we don't live in Austin, but we have been there a few times. Austin is the coolest city we have visited, however the only negatives are that is has a very small African American population and homes are a little pricey around the downtown area.
We have heard that Chapel Hill is nice. I know its part of the triangle, but does it have its own downtown? and is it a diverse community?
Yes, it has a downtown. Lots of shops/cafes. It butts up to the UNC campus (stunnngly beautiful). VERY walkable. Clean and green!
As far as being diverse, the city itself is pretty liberal, but the student body of the college has a nice mix of liberal/conservative views. In that way, I consider it truly diverse.
For racial diversity, the town is white, but, again, the student population has a lot of diversity. The town's population is about 55,000 and the college population is about 25,000 or so.
Just about any large college town. Athens, Chapel Hill, Charlottesville, etc.
