Does anyone know where I can find the murder rates of the states for 2008? Like, is it on a government site or something?

It might be on the FBI or Bureau of Justice sites.

Inside data.gov: US homicide rates by state and type | News | guardian.co.uk

That might have it as well. The Guardian is not exactly a source I trust, but I think they're just going by the FBI. It's interesting to see how murders break down by weapon. North Dakota has a very low rate of murder and what murder they had was apparently by knife or fists. Among states with relatively high murder rates the Southwest (New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas) seems to be the place to fear stabbings. Although Maryland, New York, and Tennessee have rates just as high. (going by murder rate than percent stabbings) Alaska, perhaps unsurprisingly, seems high on fist/hand murder. Louisiana would be the height for firearms-related murder.

Still they're not including Florida and that might skew things.

What I want to know is why states like Iowa,Minnesota,Utah, Idaho, Wisconsin,Montana have such low murder rates and other states have high ones, what sets them apart?

Several of those states are highly educated or have little urban poverty. A few of them do have high suicide rates though.

Looking through counties on the one site there are a few counties listed as virtually crime free for 2008. Although I'm skeptical of that for the largest counties so listed (like Franklin County, Pennsylvania) maybe it's true of say Monona County, Iowa.

It all has to do with the number of negroes. Period!

No it doesn't. I'm as white as a person can get, and even I am offended by your ignorant, racist statement.

Racism of what you say aside...

It is true some of the states with the least crime are whiter, but it's glib and simplistic to draw the conclusion you have drawn.

The following is the states listed by percentage of people who are listed as "Black or African American Alone."

Going by that and the list from the FBI/Guardian we find the "least black" states are among the safest, but that the two "least black" states (Montana and Idaho) are not the least murderous. Montana is above Nebraska which, although it has a low black population, is about twelve times as black. Mississippi should also be the "most murderous" if blackness is all that matters, but it's noticeably less murderous than Missouri which is about average in percentage black. (Even if the Guardian's link is wrong here most sources I've read do not place Mississippi as the worst for violent crime) The most extreme outlier would be New Mexico, which has a fairly low black population in percentage and a higher murder rate than Mississippi.

Things like poverty, teen parenthood, and single parenthood are likely greater indicators.

Ah, this guy comes riding in on the moral high horse. I hate to say it, but he is for the most part correct. Look at all the cities with the highest murder rates. The correlation between that and the % of blacks is pretty high. Moderator cut: off-topic/personal

EDIT: And I am not saying blacks have something in their genes that makes them violent. Rather that the situations they are in inspire it. Label me as racist, but Moderator cut: off-topic/personal I'm no more racist than anyone else.
