I live in Phoenix, AZ and have argued that we are not the only state where you can drive 2 to 5 hours for a different feel. People always boast that in Phoenix (desert), you can drive 5 hours to an ocean, or 3 hours up a mountain for skiing, cooler weather, change of scenery. I of course feel you can change scenery in a lot of other states.

So let me know, does anyone live in a city where its possible to have a nice mini vacation you can take to escape the daily grind with in 2 to 5 hours away?
Thanks,
Portland, Oregon is 1 hour from the ocean beaches and 1 hour from the mountains (year-round, no-homemade-snow skiing)! It's also 2 hours from the desert, and 2 hours from a volcano! Some people could really care less about the volcano but I think it's tres kewlz.

2. Asheville is 3 hours - bigger mountains.
3. Savannah is 4 hours - barrier islands/beaches.
4. Panama City/Pensacola is 4 hours - Florida beaches.
5. Jacksonville is 5 hours - Florida beaches.

For Chicagoans it's the Northwoods. Those on the north side of the city and the north/northwest suburbs typically invade Wisconsin on the weekends while those on the south side and south suburbs zip over to Michigan.

Well besides for driving 10mins to the beach and just booking a hotel for a day which is nice.
3 hours to Key West even shorter to other keys.
2-3 hours to the west coast of Florida
4 hours to Orlando
4 hours to Tampa and Daytona Beach, Cape Canaveral
2 hours by boat to the Bahamas
35min Flight to Nassau
Plenty of places to go for a mini vacation in Maimi

Miami: The Everglades, The Key's & Key West, The Bahama's (by boat), Disney and all the other Orlando "amusements", Cape Canaveral, The Gulf Coast. Sure there's not a lot of physical diversity but there are options. :-)
Raleigh: Mountains of NC, VA and WV, Washington, D.C., The Outer Banks and the coast of both Carolinas and Tidewater VA, Williamsburg VA and other historic areas across 3 states, Annapolis and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
