I've gotten lucky with hotwire in the past .... also I can occasionally get a smokin' deal with the club quarters (well, a relatively smokin' deal ... it's not a motel 6 by any means)

it has become more difficult though to find a good deal

From Los Angeles 2 hours or less in any direction; mountains, beach's, mojave desert. Wanna go to the beach in the winter? I've been to Seal Beach on Christmas day when it was 80 degrees. skiing is within a 3 to 5 hour drive. wild flowers...the california poppie preserve in palmdale cal. is about an hour and half from L.A. go to the sierra mountains for hiking and you can see lots of wild life as well as wild flowers. depending on traffic and how fast you drive, the giant redwoods are anywhere from a 6 to 8 hour drive up to northern cal. Seattle washington is the much the same way. I've been to a lot of states and everyone of them has great things to do and see. You just gotta be willing to drive for a few hours.

I live in Phoenix, AZ and have argued that we are not the only state where you can drive 2 to 5 hours for a different feel. People always boast that in Phoenix (desert), you can drive 5 hours to an ocean, or 3 hours up a mountain for skiing, cooler weather, change of scenery. I of course feel you can change scenery in a lot of other states.

So let me know, does anyone live in a city where its possible to have a nice mini vacation you can take to escape the daily grind with in 2 to 5 hours away?
Birmingham, Alabama here.

We are two hours from Atlanta and any number of beautiful lakes and mountain resorts. We are also three-four hours from the Smoky Mountains, and four hours from the Gulf and its incomparable beaches.
