You think Austin is some cosmopolitan metropolis? I doubt anyone outside the US has even heard of Austin. Austin will never host the Olympics.
If the US makes a bid again, I think the most likely candidates will be Chicago, New York, and San Francisco. Houston might muscle its way in due to its oil wealth, but I think it would be a poor Olympic city.
Lol I like how you immediately jump to attacking Austin. I never suggested Austin and honestly id hate to have it here ever. But if you look at the other Olympic thread, youd see that I want it in NYC. I don't want it any other city but NYC. Period. You can apologize now for jumping to conclusions.
I have to laugh at the thought of Houston hosting a summer Olympics. The heat first of all would basically eliminate it, unless the games are held in October. Secondly, do we really trust another southern city to host an Olympics after the Atlanta debacle. No way. The world won't allow it.
Denver was awarded the 1976 Winter Olympics, but voters in Colorado rejected the use of any public funds to run them. The Olympics were given back to the IOC which then awarded them to Innsbruck, Austria.
Denver is considering making a bid for 2022 or 2026 (depending on the USOC's timelines). Awarding Denver the games 50 years after they gave them back would be somewhat symbolic.
The games in Denver would be quite spread out, but Denver has some of the best/numerous facilities to host, including:
- Sports Authority Field for Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
- Several ice rinks that hold 8,000+ spectators -- Pepsi Center, Denver Coliseum, First Data Center, Magness Arena (DU Campus), as well as World Arena (Colorado Spgs), and Budweiser Events Center (Loveland)
- Several World Class ski resorts: Winter Park (served by the railroad), Breckinridge, Copper Mountain, Keystone, Vail, Steamboat Springs -- all of which have hosted professional ski races.
- Ski Jump facilities at Steamboat Springs
A couple of facilities need to be built: Speed skating oval and Bobsled track.
I agree. We've already got a lot of the facilities to host them. I'd love to see them come to Denver!

While I agree Houston would be a poor Olympic city, your logic that because Atlanta held the games, that means no other Southern city should get a chance is ridiculous? And yes, you can hold the games in September. Houston is usually in the mid 80s-lower 90s. No different than Beijing anyway.
You will not hear probably one non-American give any praise whatsoever to Atlanta for those Olympics. It is not a world class city, and didn't pull them off without a hitch. There were a lot of hitches including a bombing, sheesh! A religious anti-abortion right wing nutter from NC did the deed. Are there any world class cities in the South? Not sure, maybe Dallas but I'm sure the rest of the world wouldn't agree. Dallas could possibly do it, but the heat, lack of public transport, and the dreadful downtown would be a turn off to the rest of the world.
