...neither will half the gay men you might ask on the street. It takes a real man to admit it.

Dominance thing or whatever the excuse, it's still a man having sex with another man. It seems like a gay thing to me.

They aren't thinking clearly...which is one reason why they are in prison. So anyway, prison is the #1 place where gay men would likely be assaulted.

I am gay and I've never been assaulted anywhere.

Of course I don't walk around wearing a thong, feather boa and heels.

Not that doing that merits abuse in any form, but its not like my sexuality is obvious.

Newlywed Game? (Or whatever it was called, the one with Woolery I think)

I would actually not guess a small town because in small towns gays tend to leave, be closeted, or be protected by relatives. If I were to guess I'd say maybe a large town or small city where there's a good deal of alcohol use and/or a high amount of assault in general.

Statemaster indicates Maine, New Jersey, and Tennessee have a fair amount of anti-gay hate crimes per-capita, but this could just be a sign they report them more. Still a small-city in New Jersey or Tennessee with a high rate of general assault might be a possibility. So perhaps Brownsville, Tennessee or Camden, New Jersey.

Another possibility is that uneducated men tend to have more hostile views of homosexuals so perhaps a place like Arvin, California as it has a low rate of education and is majority male.

As for prison many of those guys could be bisexuals who would prefer heterosexuality when that's an option.

As far as the Bay Area goes, out of SF, Oakland, and San Jose, SF actually had by far the most reported hate crimes in 2006, including those based on sexual orientation:

San Francisco:
38 sexual orientation related hate crimes

San Jose:
6 sexual orientation related hate crimes

Oakland:
0 sexual orientation related hate crimes

source:abc7news.com: FBI: SF has most hate crimes in Bay Area 11/19/07

I'm not sure about racial violence, but it seems the likelihood is even higher in say Wyoming than Georgia, although the lower population density might balance that out.
Homophobia knows no geographic boundaries. It's easier/more convenient to pin it on areas with a less educated population, but history and experience would indicate otherwise. Homophobia is a psychological condition fueled by group insecurity of masculinity. Rarely is it an act of an individual. So in essence throw out the geographical aspect, unless you're in a select few major cities.

It's hard for me to imagine assaulting someone entirely for their sexual orientation anywhere...I think it is something that just takes a real psycho to do. And people like that aren't limited to anywhere. Sure, there are plenty of men who are uncomfortable with the idea of homosexuality...But it takes a real lunatic to go out there and physically harm someone. Gay bashing is usually perpetrated by insecure men with repressed homosexual urges who actually just want to beat the gay guy closeted up inside themselves. I guess those types of guys could be anywhere.

Just like the movie American Beauty.

I didn't really like the flick but that's basically what happens in it.
