I have spent quite a bit of time in all of them and I just LOVE Tennessee. Some of the nicest people I have ever met were from or in Tennessee. I spent a week visiting some friends just North of Nashville, and their neighbor was over the second evening I was there. We were talking fishing and boating, when he offered me the use of not only his bass boat, but his very nice truck to tow it to the lakes in the area while I was down there. My friends didn't fish and he knew it because we were joking about how out of touch they were for not relaxing in a boat on the water. His only stipulation was that I not crash his truck or sink his boat. I said I appreciated the offer but just couldn't use a guys boat. He went home and an hour later showed back up with the truck and boat then parked it in the yard, climbed in his wifes car and yelled out the window he wanted the gas tanks dry and the live well wet when he came back for it on Sunday.
If that was the only instance I had like that I could pass it off as just an individuals personality. In fact there have been MANY things like that, every time I have been down to TN. just super kind, open people. "Salt of the Earth" is how my Grandmother would describe them.
All five of those states are in my top 20, ironically, with Mississippi last at #19, and Kentucky first at #4, but they all seem to be great states; some I have firsthand experience with.
Besides passing through, my most detailed experience would be with Tennessee, which is not only one of the best Southern states (Up there with KY, in my opinion), but in the top 10 out of all the states. Absolutely beautiful scenery and wildlife (the Great Smoky Mountains, home to a national park which is America's most visited), some of the friendliest people around, even where you wouldn't expect it (Disproves the stereotype of the rural folk in the mountains), four great cities with different personalities - Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga, home of barbecue, great food and drink, country music, the blues, Southern gospel, etc. Not to mention the legacy of Jack Daniel's, Elvis, Andrew Jackson, etc.
TN sounds lovely, I am big into hunting with good bag limits, love scenery and lakes. I would love to visit KY and TN would you say they are completely different from MS and AL?

I don't really have any firsthand experience with MS and AL, but Mississippi and Alabama are generally considered Deep South, whereas Kentucky definately would not be, and Tennessee is somewhere in between. I've seen Tennessee lumped in with AL and MS in the Deep South category, along with Louisiana and Georgia.
I would say east Tennessee has a very Appalachian-style culture which I suppose could be found in parts of Kentucky and West Virginia as well, but this is relatively absent in Alabama and Mississippi.

I have been all over Europe, my fiance is from MS. I have been to NY, NC, SC, GA, AL MS
-has 4 distinct seasons.
-never met a reason not to celebrate at a festival/fair and most are free. The themes are as diverse as cornbread, catfish, mountains, tomatoes, opera, mules, the atomic bomb, antiques, rhododendren, moon pies, fiddles, covered bridges, Appalachian and Native American culture, etc..
-has affordable housing and property.
-has no state income tax.
-Doesn't try to run your life with a bazillion rules and regulations.
-while it gets cold in the winter, when it snows, it doesn't last long on the ground.
-has the most beautiful free state parks (no fee to enter, no fee to park)
-has the Great Smoky Mountains National Park
-has surprisingly good quality roads (could be weather-related)
-is really green from all of the rain we get.
-if there are toll roads here, I've never seen one
-has mountains, plateaus, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, dams
-has an abundance of wildlife and people still have farms/horses.
-has 3 distinct musical roots (rock and roll and blues - west (Elvis and Sun records, Beale St - Memphis); country - middle (Nashville and Grand Old Opry) , bluegrass -east Appalachia).
-has a love of history (actually most of the south does) that I have never experienced before in two other states further North. (Re-enactments/living history)
-has cheap movie prices. I saw 2012 for $4.25 and I'm not a senior yet.
-has real people, no phony baloney natives. They will talk your ear off about anything. Can't vouch for the transplants.
-has native manly men with manners (could be true for all of the south).
-Loooooves college football
-celebrates traditional holidays.

What did you think of the rest including MS compared to TN?
My fiance is going to be doing his bachelors in industrial engineering technology, he has 3 associate degrees and I will be a RN. Would he be better to stick to the south or is the midwest good for that kind of work?

I guess TN, since it has 4 seasons more than the other states. It's also a little less backwards than the other states, lol.
