I agree with you on that. Especially when it comes to people entering this country, it's their job to learn English...not mine to learn their native tongue.

However, if I'm going to be in business with a company from China...I'll speak Chinese. It is me going to their country to set up a business agreement with them. That's why a second language can be useful...for global arrangements and businesses.

But for everyday use in this country, I fully expect to speak English all the time.

That's just plain stupid,Canada is on the verge of becoming two countries because of French Quebec. English should be the only language, period.

French is widely spoken in many parts of Africa. And not just among elites.

French is the Romance language which is furthest from Latin (as opposed to Italian and Spanish, for example), so I imagine it being a bit more difficult to pick up for those learning their first Romance language, such as native English-speakers and others brought up with a Germanic tongue.

French is a nice language, but it's really only useful (in the U.S.) in certain areas of Maine and Louisiana.

It would be nice if you gave your source once in a while because all the lists I have seen French is anywhere from 11th to 18th as a first or second language.

No where near 470 million on any list I saw.

Even if those numbers are true, most of the population that speaks French is going to be in Western Africa. That is not a region of the world that I see being anywhere near as important to US interests anytime soon as East Asia, the Middle East and Latin America are.
