a very small rural town because most americans live in urban or suburban areas iirc

I think you could make it without Los Angeles. I'm not a fan of New York City but I guess the idea of coming to America with nothing and making a life for yourself originates in the Big Apple. But then again agriculture still makes up a big part of the economy in the south and of course, rural towns. (which have a lot of perks too) Personally, I'd rather live in a smaller town than NYC. Somewhere you could always rely on running into someone you know when you go out to eat.
