Seriously, I think a very underrated industry that is not being counted for Houston is the medical center. It's already the biggest in the nation if not the world and it's growing very fast. World class treatment centers are already there and they attract doctors from around the nation and world and also attracts patients from around the world. Don't sleep on that part about Houston. It isn't just the port.
It is also a major city in energy and oil.
BTW, if Chicago is not really that much known outside this country. Than it is possibly the most underrated city in the world.

So you've got the Port, the Medical Center, NASA, the center of the energy industry, and more Fortune 500 companies than anywhere in the US except NYC.

No. it is because they are young cities and are simply not known or respected outside the US in the way northeast and west coast cities are.
We, as Americans, aren't the only ones who decide what world cities are. The world decides. and from what I gather the world is pretty unaware of the size and importance of Houston, Dallas, or Atlanta.
Well, perhaps the committee that decides these things sould be a little more multinational in that case, instead of coming from a relatively unknown British university.
The ciriteria list doesn't say how many of these criteria a city needs, nor does it say which ones are essential. I could make a good case for Denver if 80% is sufficient.

Since I can't copy more than two sentences, I'll do this w/o listing the criteria, just how Denver fits them.
Denver certainly has international first-name familiarity.
Denver is the site of the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
Denver has a population of about 2.5 million metro.
Denver has Denver Interantional Airport, one of the busiest in the country and a hub for United Airlines.
Denver has one of the most ambitious rail-transit systems in the country under construction at this time. It has an extensive bus network, extending a good 50 miles from North-South and about 40 from East-West. No ferries, though, LOL.
A large hispanic community with much influence, e.g. Cinco De Mayo celebrations, Day of the Dead celebrations, etc.
Numerous IT/telecommunications companies.
Lively cultural scene with city/suburban support and taxation. Denver Pulbic Library has a large western US collection.
Six (I believe) major-league sports teams: The Broncos (football-winner of two Super Bowls), Rockies (baseball, played in World Series last year), Avalanche (hockey-won the Stanley Cup), Nuggets (basketball), Rapids (soccer) and a major-league lacrosse team (Mammoth?).
Where would San Diego rank on a list of global cities? I understand that it isn't one, and it's not even an honorable mention, God knows why -- especially to those who consider Kansas City, Richmond, and St. Louis to be honorable mentions but not San Diego. Would you match it with the likings of cities in Bangledesh, Ethiopia, and Sudan? I don't get it, what will it take San Diego to be considered EVEN as an honorable mention? Even Tijuana, its dirty serial killer brother to the south, is an honorable mention ?!?!

San Diego is next to one of the largest cities on Earth! Obviously L.A. will overshadow it due to the distance. Should Santa Barbara have an honorable mention too?
