puh-Kahn

As a yankee (PEE-Ccan) living in the south I was corrected a few times.

It was my girl-friend's proper southern grandmother that politely told me it was "puh-Kahn", and that a "PEE can" was something you put under the bed so that you didn't have to go outside at night to use the outhouse.

I did not want to see the PEE-can or the Outhouse.

puh-KAHN is closest. The first syllable hardly comes out, and so I think it ends up being p'Kahn.

Pee-can sounds like something a truck driver would keep w/ him in case there aren't any rest areas along the way.

I guess some people that say, 'bottom' would say pecan one way. Some people that say, 'boddom' would say pecan another way.

My friends from the south tease me by my pronunciation. I say pee-can. My friend from Arkansas says "It's not something you go to the bathroom in" lol.

Definitely "puh-Kahn" = rhymes with the actor James Caan's last name. (Okies, Arkies, and Texans won't have it any other way!)

When I lived on the West and East Coast I heard "pee-can" a few times.....nails on a chalkboard! I've also heard it used the wrong way in Midwestern states too, ugh.

The worst is when I hear a Yankee pronounce it on national television...like on the talk shows last week, all the talk about "pee-can" pie. Just plain sacrilege to desecrate the Lord's finest dessert like that.

Please folks, pronounce this word p e c a n properly as "puh-Kahn" and you have my word that I will work on cleaning up my grammar and diminishing my Okie twang/Southern accent.

P'khan here too. I've heard it pronounced all kinds of ways, was once asked if I'd like a slice of "peekin' pie". Had to think on that for a minute before I figured out what they were talking about.
Seems too me that it's pronounced differently from one place to another even in the south.
