Ok y'all...

This thread/poll had its origins in an informal survey I once did...and a recent thread concerning pies. It concerns the pronunciation of "pecan" (as in the nut).

The Pecan is the state tree of Texas, and the pie is especially popular in the state...and all over the South for that matter.

Anyway, there has always been some "discussion" as to the proper way to pronounce it. The two extremes are "puh-Kahn" (slight accent on second syllable) and "PEE-can".

It has actually been my observation that the "division" is at least as much East/West as North/South (acknowleging that pecans don't grow as well and are not as popular up North as in the South).

Anyway, would like to hear the replies. If you don't mind, please say where you are from (as in original accent) when you answer.

Thanks!

I'm not quite sure most pronounce it like that.

You know I think I've actually pronounced it different ways at different times. It might depend on who I am with.

Possibly I say it the puh-kahn way the most. Although I think I've said it "Pea-Kahn", kind of a mix of the two, about as much or maybe more. I'm originally from Arkansas. I never mention where I currently live when I'm online. It's in the Central Time Zone though and, as mentioned elsewhere, is north of Arkansas.

Same. It doesn't sound right saying pee-can.

Default Correction

I SHOULD have spelled the choices with more of an emphasis on the accented syllable. For instance:

puh-KAHN (my own choice LOL)
PUH-kahn
PEE-can
pee-CAN
PEE-kahn
