I want to know what type of places (Mountain towns, plains, plateaus, forests, etc) are preferred by shy and reserved people. I also want to know what states and regions of the US have the shyest people?

Stay away from small towns since everybody's all up your business there.

Either pick:
1. An ultra-big city (since most ppl don't try or care to talk to you).

Or

2. The complete middle of knowhere since obviously nobody will be around.

I'm not shy but reserved. I like cities because that's what I've known. Open, empty space is not for me.

Again, I don't know about shy but most reserved places I know enough to say:

-The PNW including Vancouver/BC

-Majority of New England

No one will bother you and will expect you not to bother them too much either.

-Minnesota and the Dakotas

Reserved but have a community orientation so more social graces and small talk, depending on the particular area.

I wonder why the New England and the Northwest tend to have more shy/reserved people while the South and Midwest tend to have the most outgoing/social people?

Likely the national origin of the first American settlers. Scandinavian, German, for the PNW and Upper Midwest (Minnesota, etc). Even though various groups arrived later, the norms of the first groups remain, with an American twist of course.

I think I recall that too, from a study, but studies will have different results. Anyway, I don't know if it's most extroverted of all but Wisconsiners I've met have been on the more extroverted and sociable side, yes.
