The bible belt is a region in a country where high amount of church attendance and religious beliefs. A bible belt has:

* Belief in creationism(unless it's a Catholic bible belt)
* Opposition to abortion and gay marriage
* Support for right wing parties
* Very rural
* Very little diversity

Hopefully as the baby boomers finally die out so to will the bible belt and gone will be ignorance and bigotry from America forever.

Wow really? The best people I know come from the "bible belt". Give me a break man. There are good people everywhere and if you can't see that your just as ignorant and bigoted as anyone.

You speak of the ignorance and bigotry of the Bible-Belters? Pot meet Kettle.

And no, with an attitude like that, you're not welcome in the South-Central.

Not true. Grand Rapids is in Michigan's Bible belt, and that area is not very rural.

The Bible Belt is much less rural than some other parts of the country, like the Plains states and the Northwest. I can't think of anywhere in the Southern Bible Belt where you can drive 50 miles without seeing signs of civilization.

That's cool...all I'm saying is when such devistation happens to other parts of the world...people from the bible belt are always the first to connect the event to 'gods judgement'...

When it occurs to others, like Haiti earthquake or Asian tsunami, it's always 'judgement from god'...

But when it occurs in ones own back yard...it's always 'just nature'....

That's why I included the part about what people don't believe. I would say the exact same thing to people who go on and on about natural disasters being God's punishment.

Amen.. I think most Christians accept the realistic assessment of Matthew 5:45 (that God sends rain on both the just and unjust). All of God's creation is subject to the varying natural elements & threats.

As per the criticism thru this thread, that the term Bible Belt is hypocritically self proclaimed.. the name wasn't created to praise Southern religiosity/moral superiority.. it is a matter-of-fact diagnosis of the South's unique preponderance (but not monopoly on) visceral, evangelical Protestantism.
