Yikes! Metro New Orleans murder rate of 24.4 is astoundingly high for an entire metro area.
And maybe i'm wrong but I have the impression that Tucson is just transplants and retirees, yet it has the highest crime index.

I would have never guessed Omaha and Columbus ranking worse than New Orleans.

Or, NY City ranking better (barely) than Syracuse.

Wow, our neighboring counties (Nassau & Suffolk) ranked #1 in safety and I totally agree with that.

Yup and Syracuse's ranking isn't bad at all. People don't realize that the Northeast has the lowest crime rate of any region in the US. I noticed how low the crime rate is in many of the NY State metros are, regardless of size.

We can link to Sperling's? I wish I'd known that I would've linked to that "manliest town" deal on the "toughest city" thread.

Anyway this looks about seven years old so things have likely changed in a few places. The middle-cities seem to have the greatest "range." Danbury, Connecticut comes out with lower crime than the tops of the other two lists while Myrtle Beach, South Carolina comes out the worst of any list. Among the mid-list Manchester, New Hampshire had no murder and relatively little assault. Although one "out of range" of the mid-list is New Orleans whose murder rate is worse than any mid-list city.

For assault Bangor, Maine seems to be the lowest of the three lists and Lubbock, Texas the worst. For rape Nassau-Suffolk looks safest with St. Louis the worst, but Rapid City is fairly close to St. Louis on this.
