See now THAT sounds a bit Midwestern to me. Back home in AZ (and as far as I could tell in CA and MD/DC) we pronounce both words the same, and it's really somewhere between æ and eɪ, not really either extreme.
In Cincinnati, I have NEVER heard anyone say "vag." It's always been with what I would call a semi-long "a."
On the other hand, most of the people around here don't differentiate between short "e" and short "i." "Been" is the same is "bin" and "pen" is the same as "pin."
Interesting. To me, both sound different when I say them. Then again, given some of my linguistic roots (much of my family are not from the midwest, but the northeast), I also pronounce Marry and merry differently, so perhaps I'm just a bit sensitive to these things.
"Vague" is pronounced with a "long A" sound; the others are not...

I have to say I'm finally beginning to understand why quizzes say I have a Midwestern accent, even though it's totally (like totally dude ) Western. Apparently both accents merge the words, but the Midwest merges them "up" while the West merges them "down."
what TV have you been watching? ive never hear anyone on TV who pronounces bag "bayg"
What can I say? I hear what I hear. I just don't think I've ever heard anyone say "baaaag," whether I was in the east, west, north or south. I don't see how that could possibly be standard. But whatever.
