You've been given ten...exactly ten...ways to improve the United States by restructuring our states to make them work better.
What are your ten? Overlaps welcome. And this one is just for fun and not to be taken too seriously
These are mine:
1. DC and the Beltway areas of VA and MD are turned into the new state of Columbia. Silver Springs is its capital.
2. The NY, NJ, and CT areas that make up metropolitan New York are turned into the new state of Empire. Yonkers is its capital.
3. The IL, WI, and IN areas that make up Chicagoland are turned into the new state of Chicago. Naperville is its capital.
4. South Florida is split off from Florida into a state of its own. West Palm is its capital.
5. California is divided into the states of Northern California and Southern California. Respective capitals are Sacramento and Santa Barbara.
6. Michigan's UP becomes a part of Wisconsin
7. Texas is divided into three states, with a northern state centered around D/FW (Texas Plains), a southern one around Houston (Gulf Texas) and a new state of West Texas. Respective capitals: Arlington, Austin, and Lubbock
8. ND and SD are consolidated into the state of Dakota. Pierre is the capital.
9. The western portions of both NYS and PA create a new state of Niagara that reflects the area being different from the eastern seaboard and really a transition zone between East Coast and Midwest. State College is the capital.
10. VT, NH, and ME consolidate into the state of New England. Concord is the capital.
I know when I lived in Spokane, everyone there believed that Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho and Western Montana should have been their own state since they are areas neglected by the more populated areas of their states and then Spokane would be the capital.
I do not feel Florida needs any type of divisions though some of the less populated parts of the state north of Orlando may feel that way. The Miami metro is the biggest and Orlando is a big money maker for the state so I feel we are pretty well taken care of for the most part.

The state of West Texas should be named LLano Estacado. Of course not all of West Texas is on the Llano Estacado, but its a great name for a state. Merge the cities of Midland and Odessa, give the new city a cool name and make it the new capital of LLano Estacado.
1)I'd split California in two pieces , South Ca with LA as the capital and North Ca with Sacramento.
2)I'd merge WA and OR with Portland as capital since we'd need to lighten a bit the Seattle-Tacoma corridor , the new state will be named Cascadia.
3)From Cascadia the inner part should be taken away and gifted to Idaho.
4)Merge the Dakotas
5)Merge the Carolinas
6)New Hampshire , Vermont and Maine should all merge together to create Northern New England with Portland as their capital.
7)Pittsburgh should be given the chance to become capital of a new state since Pennsylvania is too focused on Philly and the southeastern corner so I would create Alleghenia by merging Western Pennsylvania , West Virginia and Ohio counties east of Columbus , the major demographic/business/industrial core would be the Pittsbutgh-Cleveland corridor.
8)FL should be ripped off of its mainland counties that would be shared between Alabama and Georgia.
9)Upstate NY should secede from NYC to create its own state with Syracuse or Utica as capital.
10)What's been left in Ohio plus Indiana and Kentucky should consolidate to create a new state based on Cincinnati as its center and the medium part od the river , maybe called Ohio Valley State.
No way! The UP was our consolation prize for giving up the Toledo Strip to Ohio. If you take away the UP give us Toledo back. On second thought...
I realize that. Wars are bloody, you know. And that old one from the early 19th century is what gives us our present day warfare every year between Ann Arbor and Columbus.
Michigan doesn't even have a state university. Just some place called "That School Up North"
you realize, of course, that Austin should be blue (if Hawaii can make it, let's face it: it's a lot closer)
