I love Galveston. The beach and water are just so-so, but the town itself is such a quirky gem. Lots of Victorian architecture and very artsy. The Strand is great, and Moody Gardens is fun. They have Mardi Gras, the big biker rally, Dickens on the Strand, and several music festivals. Though I wouldn't consider it the Houston metro, as Houston is 50 miles away.

Galveston is also the home of Coastal Living Magazine's latest "idea house" in the new Beachtown neighborhood (http://www.beachtowngalveston.com/beachtown.htm - broken link).

Gulf Coast: Galveston Island for its combination of warm waters, history, architecture, & traditional Gulf Coast charm.

Pacific Coast: San Diego for its beaches & weather.

Atlantic Coast: Charleston, SC. for similar reasons to Galveston.
