Los Angeles: 366, lowest total since 1967
LA's crime rate dips to lowest rate in 50 years; homicides down more than 18 percent - latimes.com (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/sns-ap-us-la-crime-rate,0,751255.story - broken link)
Boston also recorded a 2009 homicide rate lower than recent yrs., but already 2 or 3 killings so far this year. We had 50-60 last year, peaking at about 120 in 1990 or thereabouts.

But we had an armed robbery at 7-11 on W. Newton/St. Botolph last nite near Symphony Hall! Found the suspects in Kenmore Sq. near Fenway Park...who may be linked to a killing of a convenience store clerk two weeks ago in a good part of Jamaica Plain (after the immigrant cashier gave them the money!).

This is good. Two parallel trends I think, the crimers keep getting locked up and eventually too many locked up, too old once they get out, and of course, less opportunity for crime with the recession (so many empty homes, empty offices, empty streets).
Yeah this is great news for the big cities of America. I do think it would be interesting to see how the suburban areas of these place are doing now though.
