I wanted to know what the best city in the US/Canada is to pursue an architectural career in... I have gotten recommendations such as San Francisco, New York, and a couple of others, but I want to hear the word of the people. What do you guys think?

Well, according to U.S. News and World Report, Minneapolis is the best city to look for an architectural job, followed by Milwaukee. Here's the link.

Take up another line of work?

Seriously, there are so many out of work architects in the US right now! Statistics in some areas are as high as 50%.
Texas and New York are the only places I've seen employment ads with any regularity in the last six months to a year.

Well, the best places carrier wise would be New York, San Francisco, LA, Chicago, and Boston. Portland and Seattle would be really good if your interested in green design. As for job markets, I'm not sure. You might have better luck on this site.

I'm an architect myself, and I've generally seen the most job opportunities in New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle, Charlotte, and Atlanta. In Canada, Calgary, Toronto, and Edmonton. However, it really depends on what type of firm you are looking to join though, whether it be one that primarily designs residential or commercial, low rise or high rise, suburban or urban, etc. My advice would be rather than narrowing it down by cities, just search for architecture jobs online across America and Canada, and apply to jobs that interest you, because architecture jobs are everywhere and even though the cities I mentioned seem to have the most architecture jobs available, you still may find your dream job in Miami, Phoenix, Houston, or Vancouver, or even smaller cities like Des Moines, Madison, or Fresno, or any other city for that matter.
