The few times I've been to the south (Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida), I don't recall noticing people being any nicer or any less nice than in the northeast. I take them as individuals--some people are nicer than others anywhere you go.

In my opinion, seems like everyone here has had a different experience with southerners, Europeans, and or people from the mid wed. I think what the person who is saying that Souther Charm is overated, maybe I'm wrong, but what I think she/ he is trying to say, is that there is some fakeness behind it all. Of course, one cannot generalized.
That's my though

So what did you come up with?

When I think of southern hospitality, I think of being a guest in someone's house and being served sweet tea and some form of snack (sweets, sandwich, etc.).

I think that people tend to doubt Southern hospitality because they see it as mythical or as if Southerners are superhuman. No one is perfect and no one is making that claim.

Southerners are simply what more Americans should strive to be - courteous, loyal, trustworthy, hospitable, and generous. This is especially shown when contrasted with people's attitudes in the Northeastern region of the country, where people are generally nasty as a rule of thumb and treat human kindness as an alien concept from a far away galaxy.

Are you a fan, missymom?

One of my goals in the next few years is to enjoy a mint julep at the famed derby.

Of course, you guys also have the fried chicken origins and derby pie.

Hmm, I may use humor to lighten a mood, but this is not one of those occasions.

I don't find those types of attitudes funny in the least bit, but quite depressing. There's a lot of people to pity up here.

It's ok ReluctantGardenStater, let eek think how he wants, you won't change 'em.

When I first became interested in the south, and referred to alot of the mannerisms, customs, and 'hospitality' of the region. People thought I was nuts, I was always bombarded with "Why would you want to go there" or "They'll lynch you if your an outsider, their really clannish!".

I saw past it, and I know that there is a very positive side of the south I'm going to experience soon.
