Are such communities pretty common in your area? Are they generally similar in how they look?

I only know of a couple in the area I live in:
Radisson Community Association
Radisson Community
Radisson Greens Golf Course

Village Green Apartments - Baldwinsville NY | Dawn Homes Management
Village Green, New York - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Foxfire Golf Course | Baldwinsville | Syracuse

Interestingly enough, they are both in the same school district.
Baldwinsville Central School District
Baldwinsville Schools | Baldwinsville, NY | Education.com
Baldwinsville Schools - Baldwinsville New York School Ratings - Public and Private
Test Scores for Baldwinsville Central School District | GreatSchools

Actually I can't think of anyplace around here that would fall into the "planned Community" category. Then again we are a small populated County and would probably fail if someone did try to put one up. The closest one I could think of would be a trailer park right on a lake with canals winding through it. About the most planned out housing area around .
