Scotty's Castle is a must-see! I'm sure you've looked, but the National Park Service has excellent info on park safety.

When I ran a motel that had a big European clientel, they would come to the CA desert in July and August. Many Europeans go to Death Valley in the Summer just to say they did it. It's a beautiful place, but be prepared. I had one young Italian guy staying at the motel decide to trek out into Joshua Tree National Park in August, at 10am, with one water bottle. He took a trail that was 5 miles, thinking it was 5 km, and almost killed himself trying to get back. He was heading for Death Valley from his stay in Joshua Tree I made him promise: get up at sunrise for trail walking, bring LOTS of water and sunblock, tell someone where you are going.

Oh, and going to Scotty's Castle is a must!

I love Death Valley -- been there a few times as a side trip when Vegas got boring. Fly into Vegas, rent a car, and you're only an hour or so away, and there are a couple of ghost towns on the way to stop at.

The best time to go would be late March/early April, when the desert is in bloom and it's warm but not dangerously so. I wouldn't go in July or August even if I were hauling a tanker of water and a team of doctors along with me.

Default Death Valley in 1989

I went to Las Vegas with my boyfriend. We went there the week of July 4th,and and we rented a car after a few days. It was 120 degrees at midnight the first night we landed(we flew). It was a great crusie and I am glad I saw it but OH MY GOD! The temps werwe in the 100's,and when got out of the air conditioned car, it was like a blast furnace.Way too hot for me but it was quite the experience. On the way their we stopped at Hell's Gate.LOL!
