My partner and I are both 60 and recently retired. We live in the suburbs of El Paso and are ready for a change from high desert to green grass, gardens and a nice long growing season. We would love to find a small city like Asheville, NC, somewhere in the south or southeast United States where we could retire. Asheville is very nice but somewhat $$$. We would like to find an updated 3000 sq foot house on a few acres for around $300k in a community with good medical and a college or university.

That's not too much to ask, is it? Thanks, John

What state are you most interested in? Narrow it down, then post the question on that particular state's forum.

If you didn't mind the Northeast, Ithaca NY would have been perfect. Has Ivy League Cornell U., Ithaca college and a SUNY Community College in the immediate area. Is known for being "liberal", a lot to do for it's size, natural beauty, good health care facilities and is generally safe. It has a big vegetarian/organic culture as well.

Check out Carrboro, NC - right next door to Chapel Hill.

It too will be more expensive than they'd like.
To the OP, I think your wish list is too optimistic for your stated price range.
