My wife and two small children 3 and 6 are planning on leaving California for good. We have no idea where to go but we have looked at Chapel Hill NC, Chapel Hill / Harrisburg PA, Cape Cod. We are looking for a mid size city or township to raise our kids and give them more freedom than we can provide here. California has become so expensive we can barely survive.
My wife and I are very active in our community and hope to bring that same enthusiam to our new home.
Particulars are: We want to be by the water ( river or ocean) doesn't matter. My wife wants to tranfer to a four year college in Accounting. I work in construction and have been a Superintendent for 3 years doing coastal custom remodels. I have also owned a restaurant and worked in the food business for 18 years. We will need to survive on a single income for the first two years. We are looking for a 2 or 3 bedroom to rent, preferably a house but cool apartment would do (I think they are called Row Houses). We can't afford more than $1000 a month. We don't mind the snow or rain but love our Sun.

Please help us with suggestions of places or information on the places we have looked.

Your infinite wisdom is much appreciated.

Thank you it looks a little slow for us, what about New Bedford, MASS. My wife is looking at Dartmouth.

Upstate NY might work. Around my area, you might like Baldwinsville. It's about 15 minutes northwest of Syracuse and has a range of housing options. Good schools, has a Main Street that is being revitalized, the Seneca River runs right through it and more. Syracuse University and Le Moyne college are in Syracuse and you could could also consider SUNY-Oswego, which is about 25 minutes north of B'ville. I graduated from there and have a friend that graduated with a degree in Accounting.

You might like Oswego itself, as it is on Lake Ontario and has the Oswego River running through it. http://www.oswegony.org/

Something in the Buffalo area, like Fredonia could be good too. Other places in or around Plattsburgh, Ithaca, Rochester, Albany, Geneva, Binghamton and many other spots could work for you and your family. Is there anything else you are particularly looking for?

Dartmouth is in Hanover, NH, and would be a solid 4 hour commute from New Bedford, MA.

Perhaps he was meaning UMass-Dartmouth? That's located relatively near there.

New Bedford has its rough spots...but it has some beautiful areas too. The downtown is great from what I remember. I think you would be able to find a spot down there for $1,000 a month.

If you were indeed referring to Dartmouth College, then perhaps you could look at Providence, Rhode Island and look at Brown University instead. The campus and surrounding area of Brown is beautiful and relatively cheap. Rhode Island also has some of the most beautiful areas I've seen anywhere. Also look at Bristol, RI.

I think 'ckhthankgod' 's post referring to Monroe Co. & Rochester, NY or Binghamton, NY might be better than the other areas *only if you would like to get work in construction*...the other areas aren't exactly booming in that regard. Otherwise 'ckhthankgod' is right-on for education and/or restaurant opportunities.
