I recommend Austin, Texas. And Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (Chapel Hill itself however, has higher taxes). Asheville, NC and Boone, NC are full of artistic people, craftsmen, hippies, and folk musicians. Athens, GA and Gainesville, FL (which has a large Gay population and is excellent for bicycling) are other possibilities.
Houston, TX for such a huge metropolis, everyone says it has poor public transportation, very hot and humid, and is extremely car-dependent.
I think Houston would be your best bet. I have been here for 3 years and can not believe how open to acceptance people are here. I thought it would be different with Houston being in the Bible belt but it is just so diversified. You see people here from all over the world. It seems like only about half of the people speak english as their first language it seems. Well good luck
plus, my best friend grew up there and he's answered a lot of my questions about the place, further pushing me away from atlanta.
I think you should at least check things out for yourself, and I'd say that about any city. Several years have passed between childhood and your entrance to adulthood.
In a lot of cities in the South, you're more likely to find immigrants, blacks, and inerracial couples than most other cities in the US. Now social liberals in large numbers, not so much, but in some cities yeah.
