I currently live in Los Angeles and people have a great sense of style here. Everyone is dressed well. Plenty of clothes shopping available too, and I've turned into a bit of a clothes wh(ore) whilst living here. When it came time to do taxes, I realized I'd spent all my income. Yet when I was packing up my apartment to put everything in storage, I was overcome by all the boxes of clothes -- and shoes! -- and purses! Sometimes I'll go to another town, and I'm shocked by how badly everyone dresses. You take it for granted living in Los Angeles.

I've just given you a very superficial example, but clothes and style also demonstrate a town's imagination, it's creativity, and art community. Just for fun, what are some of the best dressed towns you know of? Any surprises out there?

For many years, people in NYC dressed down. Around two or so years ago, I noticed a change in attire for women from casual to almost "overdressed". But as for well-dressed, often that is in the eye of the beholder and very much a regional issue.

I would not say that style is in the eye of the beholder. I remember going to visit some parts of Mass, and the people their dressed horrid. Women had horrible hair-color jobs. You can dress casual and still have something going on.

I respectfully disagree--style is regional not universal unless one proscribes to the theory that rags like Vogue dictate style!

Folks dress differently in MO than CA, and differently in NH than MA.

I just remembered a really good example of what I am referencing.

I invited a friend to visit one summer in Newport, RI. She is a wealthy, Sardinian (Italy) native, but was at that time a colleague in NYC. She came dressed to kill with high-heel shoes, gloves and a veiled hat. I greeted her in typical beachwear clothes:shorts, a loose shirt and sandals.

Regional difference in what is considered style: was she stylish; definitely; was I stylish; certainly for the community and by the standards of the community. She, however, stood out like a mannequin.

On the road,

I'm talking about good taste, not overdressed or under dressed. I think somehow we're on two different wave lengths, but that's okay...

People in big cities tend to be more style conscious, maybe because of where they work or the social activities. I remember being in England (not London) and being shocked at the horrible sense of style the locals had. In France, on the other hand, everyone looks great and nobody lets themselves get fat. Women there would never think of stepping out of the house in sweatpants. In NYC, people always look cool. For some reason, in the midwest, people tend to look more frumpy. When I think of an artsy town, I think of a place where people are inventive or imaginative about how they look and dress, and you don't need a lot of money to be creative either.
