I have to admit many of my favorite musicians or groups aren't from the US. I picked New York and New Orleans though. Baltimore is a US city I might add as they've had some good musicians born or raised there. (Tori Amos, Cab Calloway, and Billie Holiday spent a fair amount of her childhood there) Although Memphis is probably an even better addition as mentioned above.
You need to include SoCal instead of LA. There are several good bands coming out of Orange County. Alot of punk rock (Social Distortion, Offspring, and Bad Religion) got there start in OC. Then "stoner rock" started in the SoCal desert. Most notably, Queens of the Stone Age from Palm Desert. IMO, best band of the 00's. LA itself doesn't really produce any rock bands anymore. I know Hollywood is apart of LA to the nation but to a local, Hollywood isn't.
While I loved Houston hip hop back in the day. The past few years have been very underwhelming from there. Rappers are still talking about lean, 84's, cars, grills and it's boring and lacks creativity. It's sad that Houston doesn't appreciate artists like V-Zilla who lyrically would stomp every artist that has came from that city the past 5 years.
Chicago area with Lupe, Freddie Gibbs, Rhymefest, Cool Kids is one of my favorites.
NYC speaks for itself
LA, SF, and California period impresses me. Heck, the best young artist right now could be from Fresno and that's no disrespect to the other younger artists throughout that state.
I'm going to need Texas to step it's game up. *edit*. All that said, there are many talented artists in Texas. But they aren't as popular.
I went with New York, as the Talking Heads are probably my favorite American band ever.
This is where things can get a little hazy, because I would say the Talking Heads are from RISD in Providence, RI. I guess most people and Wikipedia disagree with me but they met at RISD and starting playing together there.

True, they did come out of Rhode Island where the band members attended college, but since that wasn't an option I don't think it's a stretch to choose New York since they became popular playing at CBGBs and had their breakthrough period in New York(where David Byrne still lives).
