On a clear day, one can see Mt. Shasta from the top of Pilot Butte State Park in Bend, Oregon (elevation 4142 feet in a city that is at 3623 feet).

It is 189 miles, straight line distance.

It depends on the weather, topography, and vertical relief (prominence is something completely different for the poster(s) that mention it).

The Pittsburgh Steelers have their training camp at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA. Chestnut Ridge provides a nice backdrop for all the activity. It's about four miles away.

We've seen Rainier from near Moses Lake on I-90, and I've seen pictures from Ritzville, which is about 165 miles away.

Also, I've seen pictures of Rainier from 130 miles north at Samish Overlook, south of Bellingham, and some say you can see it from Bellingham Bay.

The furthest mountain that I've personally seen was Denali from Ted Stevens Int'l Airport/Earthquake Park, which is about 150 miles south. There are some locations where you can see the mountain from 200 miles.

From my apartment in Tucson I can see Picacho Peak on a clear day. Even on a somewhat not clear day. About 40 miles away. Picacho Peak is about halfway in-between the drive from Phoenix to Tucson, slightly less. From Paradise Valley in Phoenix the Four Peaks are about 55 miles away, and are easily seen.

In the valleys of the southwest it's hard to see mountains far away because there are much nearer mountains that are tall on their own, especially in Tucson.

It's easier in the high desert part of the state around the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley.

On a clear day, I can see the Black Hills from Badlands National Park. It's a distance of roughly 70-80 miles. When driving home across I-90, I can usually start seeing them around Wall, SD or shortly after.

I grew up on the plains so it has always been a treat to catch the first glimpse of the hills/mountains. I just love it! I've lived in the Black Hills for over four years now and made the drive back and forth many times, and that first glimpse never gets old.

I'm late but cool thread. There are some cool places in the east to see the Appalachians. Of course this has to be on a clear day in the winter. Go to Hartwell dam. Walk out to the middle of the dam on a clear winter day and you can see Table Rock in Pickens County, SC; about 50 miles north. Another spot is the parking deck in downtown Athens, GA on College St. You can see the Appalachians from there; about 50 miles. 2 other cool spots; driving west on I-70 from Kansas; you see Pikes Peak about 100 miles out. Then driving south viewing the Spanish Mountains on I-25 South of Colorado Springs.
