I must say, preps do dress quite well. What's with the whole obsession over those shorts with funny little prints on them though?

That said, the general air carried by a 'stereotypical prep' is nauseating.

Bottom line: you sound clique-obsessed, possibly an inferiority complex stemming from the fact that you don't feel you "measure up" to a bunch of spoiled M*******s.

Just be yourself, dude. Being cliquish should be considered a mental disorder. Southern "prepster"? You gotta be kiddin me.
Most people in New England are cliquish simply because they prefer to have a few close friends and real relationships. I'll take that any day over the fair weather friends I might make in my current home of Kansas City.

Okay the OP says that a "true" southern prep would be someone that goes to a private college. NOT true at all.

Probably the two preppiest schools in the south are....get ready....The University of Alabama, and The University of Miss.

The thing is that these two schools ARE the schools of the wealthy in their respective states. There are no substantial private schools to compete with them.

And I don't mean that just some preps go there. They compose the majority of the student body. Granted not all of them may be very wealthy but they certainly dress like it.

I can assure the OP that there is more money (private dollars) floating around the UA campus than at whatever school he went to. There are probably more polo shirts at a UA football game than in the state of massachussets. Hell girls wear dresses to football games. It pretty insane really.

Also a lot of it centers around these schools greek life. For those not from the south there is quite a difference between northern and southern fraternities and sororities.

If you don't believe me then just come and check these places out, they are in no way indicative of the states in which they are located. They took me by surprise.

Default The Southern prep

How to identify a Southern prep

1. He drives a fully-loaded pickup truck or truck-based SUV.

2. He knows how to dress up when he has to, but good luck making take off his beat-up baseball cap.

3. His name ends in "Jr.," "III" or "IV."

4. His family is among the upper crust of whichever small town he's from, and at least one of his parents owns a small business.

5. He's a member of a fraternity at the largest university in his state.

6. He shares his first name with noteworthy supporters of the Confederacy, or characters in Gone With The Wind.

I have to disagree and assert that the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority house at the University of Georgia is Ground Zero for Southern Preppydom.

Online Athens: University of Georgia Greek System (http://www.onlineathens.com/ugalife/greek/sorority/kappakappagamma.shtml - broken link)

There are sororities at UGA that actually review the home zip codes of prospective rushees to ensure their pedigree.

If he's a "III", his nickname will almost certainly be "Trey".

Someone referred to the Hamptons as being preppy - not at all. It's more trendy than anything.

IMO the epitome of preppy is the Connecticut shoreline from Greenwich to Fairfield, and from Guilford to Fenwick. Very "Ralph Lauren sweater over a long sleeved Oxford with khaki shorts" kind of place (in the summer). When it's colder, think LL Bean, North Face, etc.

...I forgot to include some of the Hartford/Litchfield County 'burbs (where I believe you're from) like Avon, Glastonbury, Roxbury, Simsbury and Washington Depot.

And I agree that people in these towns are incredibly friendly.

It sounds like Bama and Ole Miss have a very similar demographic to my alma mater, Clemson University. Let me just say this: you need to see more of the country.

Basically what it comes down to is cultural differences. Girls at Bammer will wear sun dresses to football games, while girls at Boston College will wear (the horrible) Superfan T-Shirts. But when everyone goes out at night, you'll see a much different girl going out in Chestnut Hill.

Also, the "preppy" look is ridiculously popular in places like the Cape, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. To rebuttle your claim that there are more polo shirts at a Bammer game than in the state of Mass...there's likely more polos on the Cape & Islands than there are people in Bama or Miss combined haha...not to mention farrrrrr more money.

I'd like to second that and also add Clemson's chapter of KKG too...they were just

You left out the University of Georgia. (Georgia Tech is no competition because it's where the "nerds" go.)

I hate, hate, HATE it when girls dress up for football games! You're supposed to paint your face, drink beer and scream your heads off, not dress up! You wanna dress up and be "seen"? Do it AFTER the game, and go to a nightclub!

Don't get me wrong; I love it when a girl dresses up, just not for football games.

I absolutely agree. My brother was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon at the University of Pittsburgh, and there wasn't nearly the amount of pomp and circumstance around Pitt's Greek life that there is at the University of Georgia. UGA's fraternities and sororities are a lot more pompous, exclusive, and dare I say snobbish? On the other hand, Pitt's fraternities and sororities came straight out of National Lampoon's Animal House. At UGA, the average price of a vehicle in the parking lot of a frat house is over $30K. At my brother's fraternity, only a couple of people needed cars. The rest of them had bikes or scooters, and shared a beat-up, 1980's-model Oldsmobile if they needed to drive somewhere. (Pitt's campus is very urban and walkable, even compared to UGA's.) Many of UGA's fraternities have cooks. Pitt's fraternities have refrigerators full of Ramen noodles and beer.
