Des Moines is very safe. There's actually a couple of gay bars. And Ames actually hosts the midwest LGTBA conference.

Gay enclaves: Plainfield (beautiful redone Victorian homes)
New Brunswick (revitalized city with Rutgers college)
or if you just want to jump over the border into New Hope, PA - artsy, pretty town with great schools

Oak Park, IL is Gay Friendly Government wise. Forest Park has a Gay Bar, I forget the name, but it's at Randolph and Harlem.

Holy Canoli! You're quite a fortunate person to be able to explore a new life seemingly anywhere in the United States. As a fellow gay person, I hope being forced to inquire about "tolerance" becomes more and more of a "non-issue" once the right-wingers in this nation become quelled by the liberal uprising. Honestly, why is it anyone else's business if your next-door neighbor happens to be in love with a member of the same sex? People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

P.S. Why every city in America except for my beloved Scranton, PA? Why does everyone think we have "cooties?" When you and your partner move in next-door to me, our metropolitan population will become 599,997 straight and three gay! LOL!

I lived in Scranton for 3 years...I wouldn't recommend living there for gays....or straights!

Sssshhhh...don't tell him that! I need a larger dating pool to move here (Sniffle, sniffle!) I'm tiring of having to commute to NY/NJ for relationships.

Default Omaha Gay Website

Here's an interesting website about the gay scene in Omaha. It includes restaraunt reviews, entertainment, clubs, etc.
