But I think most would agree that Miami is much different from the rest of Florida and much different from Houston or Dallas - diversity comes in different forms - doesn't make any less diverse; just different
Miami is a bit anomalous in the South - But no two places (including Dallas and Houston) are exactly the same; just some more different

Well I never disagreed with Miami being different, but people act as if Texas is some backwards hick infested place. Houston being located in Texas should not be used to downplay the diversity and variety of cultures within the city.

Because Texans, and in particular Texans in politics, are known for having very, very, very conservative agendas. Agendas that mesh nicely with a "traditional" Texan and Southern white, Baptist heritage.
Miami is very flashy, very glamorous, and very wealthy. The Cubans and other Latinos who moved from Argentina and South America are extremely worldly and quite well-off.
Miami is very Catholic, not just in the Latino population, but in the Black Haitian population, plus the transplanted Irish and Italian New Yorkers who retired there. It's also quite Jewish.
Miami is also very much on the global map when Europeans want to go to America to let loose. Where does your average German 30-something looking for some cool nightclubs, fantastic shopping and sunbathing go when he or she comes to America -- Houston or Miami?

Asking if Miami is southern is like asking if Michael Jackson was black....

How does that answer what I asked. You've said that over and over again and I've acknowledged that, now can you answer my question. If you can't just say you can't.
All you're doing is telling me how Miami is different from the south. I'm asking why other places can be even less southern in culture and be considered southern, but Miami can't.

You mean at one time he was black and then he wasn't?
Except that doesn't hold true for Miami.
Miami was once the site of a Spanish mission -- so that negates any Southernness there.
Miami proper was founded by a woman, Julia Tuttle, from Cleveland, Ohio. Again, no Southernness. She then convinced a New Yorker named Henry Flagler to expand his railroad to Miami which was the catalyst for most of its growth. Well that, and air conditioning.
I don't quite see any Southern connection at all in Miami's history.

Didn't I ask you before we started this to bring your views to the Miami forum!!! I answerd your question... If you don't like my answer And how I answered it then oh well..
If Houston Or any other city wanna say there less southern then that's fine, but the difference is miamis is a fact that can be written down and proved.. And copywrited that it's the least southern city of allthe major southern cities...

So you think no native Floridians settled in Miami after it's founding. No blacks from GA and northern FL were brought down for labor. hmm....
