What is your favorite resort island in the US? Islands where the way to go is by boat, ferry, or plane (no bridges connecting the mainland).

None of the above.

Mackinac Island, MI is my personal favorite.

I've been to those in the east and a couple in the west on your list, but haven't been to Hawaii yet.

HI to me is the clear cut winner - to me the word resort just places this apart.

Not that the others listed are not great - but feel a little more like a regional destination than a paradise like HI. That being said paradise can have many different meanings (to me an afternoon on a beach in Jersey can be my own paradise when needed). I was also glad to see to see Ocrakoke on the list based on the criteria. Resort no but a great location none-the-less

some others when I think of resort - PR and the US Virgin Islands

Been to Maui and it is overrated. Not that it is not great but I expected heaven plopped right into the middle of the Pacific Ocean and it wasn't.

For my choice it would be Nantucket. The entire island is beaches and quaint villages that make you feel like it is still 1840.

Oh Yeah!!! I always take a risk of forgetting at least 1 or 2 significant option on the poll as C-D makes it difficult to edit poll/thread options once created. If there is a moderator floating around in the audience... please add Mackinac Island to the poll.

Makinac Island looks very laid back (no cars right?). Great Lakes missed the radar somehow but I've seen it on TV, probably one of the travel channel romantic couples destination shows or something akin to that. The big front porch (I mean big, biggest in the world perhaps) at that hotel looks cool. Looks like a great place for a bicycle, then again most of these islands are good for biking. Also, I believe Ontario Canada has some nice little islands in the Great Lakes.

One thing I noticed on islands, particularly Martha's Vineyard and the San Juan Islands is people have a lot of dogs on islands. Also visit in the off season and most people wave at you when driving by.

Oahu by far for me. It has most everything you could need. A dense vibrant city, small quaint towns, luxurious resorts, amazing scenery, amazing beaches, great food, unique culture, friendly people, etc...

The Big Island is cool too and I go there often but there are no big cities and very few beaches, but lots of nice, big resorts.

Pics of Oahu from April of last year:

I have been to several of the islands above…but the Florida Keys will always my favorite islands off the USA mainland.

Beyond the beauty of the place, the laid back locals, the fresh sea food, and burning tropical sun…there is a castaway feeling in the Florida Keys that make it unlike anywhere in the USA. Of course there are many big resorts…but I sometimes think folks loose the tropical vibe when they stay in a Hilton or Marriott. The ride down the Overseas Highway (Route 1) through the Keys is the most southerly road on the USA mainland and has that “last stop” feel to it. Once you get away from the more built up areas…it feels like you could just keep driving south right into the Caribbean Sea.
