What are the states that are more democratic, more socially conscious and have the most gun control laws and services? Education is a top priority? Anyone know? Thanks,

In order to keep this thread on topic for General US, it must stick to geography and AVOID national politics and issues. The latter are only on topic in City-Data's Politics and Other Controversies forum.

Suggesting places that meet the OP's requirements is OK.

Suggesting that the OP's requirements are good/bad/smart/foolish/etc. or providing details to support any of those qualitative judgments is off topic in this forum.

I would think most of New England and the Pacific Northwest. By Pacific Northwest I'd include Northern California. For the Midwest I'd guess Wisconsin as the most progressive.

The eastern half of Massachusetts (geographically) is probably where you'll feel most comfortable. Maryland and New Jersey might also work.

Probably somewhere in the North East. California is considered a left-leaning state, but that's only because a few massive population centers (LA and Bay Area) are very liberal, while most of the state is actually rural and conservative. This is actually true of most West Coast states. For example, Washington is considered liberal, but the rural areas around Spokane are certainly conservative.

Going by Gallup the states that have the lowest "net-conservative", all states are listed as having more self-identified conservatives than liberals, are

Vermont
Hawaii
Massachusetts
New York
Rhode Island
Oregon
California

State of the States

Of those Massachusetts and Vermont seem best on High School graduation rates.

Going by Wikipedia's "political party strength by state" will give you some sense why I didn't go by "Democratic states" as the title does. The states where the Democratic Party are strongest appear to be...

Arkansas - It's a "Red-state" but all state and national offices seem to be held or dominated by Democrats. It appears to only have one Republican representative in Congress.
Illinois
Maryland
New York - Granted in the above.
Oregon - Granted in the above.
West Virginia - Like Arkansas it's a red state where all state and national offices are Democratic. Gallup indicates it's among the 15 or so states where the majority of the people are of the Democratic Party or lean that way.

Massachusetts seems to be the ideal place. Vermont is routinely voted #1 for education but despite their primarily left-leaning laws they have some of the most lenient gun-control laws in the country. Massachusetts is usually #2 for [public lower] education and is obviously also well-known for private higher ed. Massachusetts is the birthplace of public education, the birthplace of America, and the most "democratic" state in the country.
