I'd step up if they'd take me. Which they won't.

I don't hate where I'm from, but I will probably move when I can. The area itself is great, but the prevailing attitudes amongst a lot of people irritate me. I love the amenities of a big, worldly city but I need that nice community feeling that a small town provides. There are some neighborhoods around here that are like that. Oh yeah, and the insanely high cost of living doesn't help.

I'm sorry. From your original post, I just assumed you were much younger.

Maybe that experience in the Marines is a factor in your hating where you are now so badly. You know, there was an old song on that subject about the troops returning from WWI. "How do you keep them down on the farm, once they've seen gay Pairee." Or, in modern-day parlance, Baghdad or Kirkuk or Mosul or Kabul or even San Diego or South Carolina. "Home" can seem pretty tame and boring.

(cuz honestly this forum is the furthest away, I'ma be able to get for a looooooooong time).
I hated where I was from so I got out after high school. But I was the exception. A lot of people in my town said they hated it and wanted to get out, but very few actually did (going to college 30-90 minutes away and coming home every weekend doesn't count as getting out in my book). My younger brother loves it in my old town so not everyone hates where they're from. I think there are 3 groups of people: those that hate where they're from and move, those that say they hate where they're from but stay, and those that like where they're from. The second group seems most common.

I don't think hating where you're from is just a young person thing. You either like it or you don't, it doesn't matter how old you are. It's just that a lot of people stay despite the fact that they supposedly hate where they're from.

My philosophy is you have no control over where you're born and/or where you grew up so if you don't like it, you shouldn't stay.

I think it's fairly normal. A lot of people hate where they're from for a variety of reasons, whether it be that it's too boring, too small, too big, or just plain too familiar. For me, it was all about familiarity. Once I graduated from Columbia after living most of my life in New York City, I couldn't wait to get the heck out of it. I hated it and it was no longer an exciting place to live, not because there was anything wrong with the city, but because I just knew the city too well and wanted to experience other places in the country. I ended up moving back here after 6 years, and I love it more than ever now, but I definitely needed the change of location at the time.

Anyways, if you hate where you are, move. I don't know your exact age, but I'm going to assume late teens/early 20s from the sound of your posts? You could always move for school, look for jobs in other places, join the military, peace corps, etc.

Yup, normal.

I grew up in what is probably one of the most sought after towns in the country, and I didn't appreciate a single thing about it until I left. Moved across the country, lived in a few states on the opposite coast, and realized I had it pretty darn good back home! Problem is, I've now married an east coast boy and gotten certifications for work that are only good in states out here...so going back to California is a dream at best.
