There aren't any really bad weather months in coastal California for the most part. But if a person lives 10-20 miles inland from the ocean it can get uncomfortable during summer, esp August. 90's & periods of fairly high humidity mean staying indoors until sunset in the LA valleys. I'm not surprised that August ranks as one of the worst months in the U.S.
May and June by far for coastal Southern Califronia. AKA May gray and June gloom. It basically an extension of winter except its not as cold at night and there is more marine layer. Some years its not that bad but May and June are the cloudiest months in SD. Spring is by far my least favorite "season" in SD.
I say November. The weather is deteriorating rapidly and there are no longer colorful leaves. And the days are getting shorter. I don't think January is as bad because 1) You have largely adapted to the cold weather and 2) We are gaining a minute of sunlight each day. Sometimes there is hope of a new year, particularly if the previous was horrible.
I always get that 'weird' feeling in the fall. It's a depressing feel. Things are dying, it's getting colder, usually the beginnning of school, summer is a memory, days are shorter, leaves fall off.

this is a really good argument for november (and january), and one I completely agree with.
Here in Los Angeles, for me personally the least comfortable months weather-wise would be July through September at least. It is hot and that's when we have the most smog which aggravates my allergies. October and November can be unpredictable. But at least the heat usually isn't that humid which is an obvious plus. I am the opposite of many people because when December and January comes around I am really excited
