Just wondering if there are any large cities [500,000+] that voted Republican in the 2008 election. Even cities like Indianapolis & Omaha voted for Obama. Moderator cut: see comment

Reason: If we get into "why" here, that will take the thread into national politics territory that is off topic in this forum.

Jacksonville does and so does Oklahoma City and Memphis.
I think Phoenix is at least borderline. San Antonio and Fort Worth are conservative cities but I don't know for sure. You might want to look into Nashville too.

San Antonio precincts were split red/blue almost evenly in '04 and '08. IIRC, the majority of San Antonio votes went red in '04 and blue in '08. It's kind of a tossup here. 3 of San Antonio's 4 congressional districts are blue ATM.

Yeah it's a pretty borderline city in that case.
It's definitely worth watching for the next election in 2012. I'm actually looking forward to changes (if any) occurring in Texas! The midterm elections later this year will give me a good idea where we're headed (as a state).
The way it seems like right now, Governor Perry is going to be out in a few months.
Indianapolis, or its county, went for Bush in 2000. I thought it went for him twice, but Marion County apparently went for Kerry. However Omaha was certainly a surprise as he indicated as Douglas County hadn't been won by a Democratic Presidential candidate since LBJ. Anyway the following maps should help the OP out.
They indicate the following cities are in counties that went for McCain
Jacksonville, Florida - Barely
Oklahoma City - By a good margin
Fort Worth - Barely
Phoenix - But I think this is due to the suburbs and that the city itself went for Obama.
Tulsa, Oklahoma - Good margin, might be too small for what you mean.
Virginia Beach - An independent city so it just did go for McCain, but it might be too small for you. Also Norfolk went for Obama.
Jacksonville and OKC might be the only ones big enough for what you mean.
What about Salt Lake City? Aren't a lot of the people Mormons there? Or is it a different part of Utah?
