The first city coming to mind is Philadelphia, after that Baltimore, then Washington DC.

Hmm, you want us to list cities with "things to do"?

So ... the question is, what cities are livable with lots to do? Or what cities are similar to Chicago or Boston?
The two questions aren't the same.
If the former, there's tons of cities with lots to do and are livable.
If that latter ... then I'll go out and say there isn't any, as both cities are unique.

If your looking for old school urban cities w/ vibrant downtowns, dense neighborhoods, and good public transit: Philly and San Francisco.
DC also has some of these attributes. But it lacks the critical mass of a mixed use downtown that you will find in the other cities.
NYC also comes to mind. But as was pointed out, its on a much larger scale.

I disagree 100%. I live in Philly and used to live in DC.
DC has as much a concentration of "things to do" as Philly without the urban grit. DC's METRO system is clean and efficient. Critical mass isn't a criteria for for vibrancy.
