around $250,000 that is in or near a vibrant, clean city/town that has outdoor cafes, great parks and libraries and more importantly, great public schools? Please tell me where I can find this.

I would like to ask the same thing, but add proximity to sizable mountains and water (ocean, lake, river, etc.)

Maine. For 250K you'll have to be outside of Portland but still within an easy drive. Great coastline, great skiing, hiking, etc. Maine has very good schools, both public and private.

Suburbs of Rochester NY -- Close to Lake Ontario and Finger Lakes. (Just spent the day with friends yesterday on Canandaigua Lake at the southern end -- it's a beautiful area.) There's also the Genesee River right through the area -- it cuts through Letchworth State Park just south of Rochester and forms a large gorge -- lots of hiking trails there.

Re: Mountains -- About a 4 hour drive to the Adirondacks area; about 5 hours to get to the High Peaks area in the Adirondacks. Not the "sizable" mountains of Vermont/New Hampshire, and certainly not out west, but a beautiful area none-the-less, which is also filled with many lakes.

Northeastern Pennsylvania. You can also be within commuting distance to a great career opportunity in Greater NYC, which is 90-minutes to two hours away.
