I'm shocked at some of the posts in this thread. Of course NYC is the premiere city in the U.S. If it suddenly vanished, it would definitely send shockwaves throughout the country. It's the financial capital of the world, too. Everything is in NYC. And although L.A. is big on film, NYC is a close second, with 14% of all movies taking place in NYC.

As would the loss of Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, or Chicago.

If about 10 U.S cities vanished it would send massive shockwaves throughout the country. Having been there, as well as every other major city in this country, no it most definately isn't.
I actually went there dead last after going to every other city, expecting it to be just wayyyyy better than every other city, and honestly it isn't. I will concede that its really big, and really packed. With a very efficient, but rather grungy transit system. But a really good one however.
It does control alot of the financial systems in the country, kinda. Its not as if every factor effecting those major financial institutions is controled by NYC alone, there nationaly controlled. Other than having alot of people its really not much more to this country than several other cities. As is far from the importance that a place like seoul south korea, or buenos airies have to their countries.
As would the loss of Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, or Chicago.
Or New Orleans; port of louisiana largest in country by tonnage,
Or Houston; energy and medical research capital of america and probably the world, and 2nd largest port, #2 in fortune 500 behind NY. Lose NO, and Hou to a hurricane and watch gas prices go up tremendously.
Or Atlanta; Delta hub and gateway to the rest of U.S as well as Europe, Africa, ect ect. Busiest airport in world. Anyone who's seen a flight map of ATL's airport would understand that fully. Plus many other corporations CNN, Coca Cola, don't live there but im sure there's plenty
Or San Fran, Austin, and Seattle; all very major computer and technology capitals/ microsoft, dell, texas instruments, ect ect.
Yea NY does alot, but definately isn't THE city for all of the U.S. It definately doesn't handle everything and the U.S doesn't really revolve around it; although plenty of people seem to think so for some reason. For it to be THE city, then is would have to dominate in much more than just a crashing wall street financial system, and alot of media concentration. Although those are 2 very major things, but what in the above list isn't?

No, it's obviously not the 'primate' city of the US. LA has just as much, if not more, dominance in areas like entertainment and pop-culture. I hear the 'Valley girl' type accent in NYC, yet I haven't heard anyone from Sherman Oaks pretend to sound like they are from Brooklyn.

The question is not whether NYC is the "premiere city" of the U.S. but whether it is a primate city. It is arguably the "premiere city" (whatever that means) but it is clearly not a primate city. It is not the number one city in politics. That would be Washington D.C. It is not the number one in media. That would be Los Angeles. It is not the number one in universities. That would be Boston. New York is the number one city in terms of the economy, and arguably culture, but it is not a primate city.
Thats just cuz there is no pretending! Either you from brooklyn or you ain't!
How's that 5.9?? I didn't feel it down here in NC, although other people did apparently...
