"Jesup" (Atlanta, Savannah, Statesboro: appointed, crime, homes)

When I say Jesup, what comes to mind ? Good, bad and the ugly please !

I can't think of anything bad about Jesup except if you like night life you'll be disappointed here, but Brunswick and Savannah are within 45-90 minutes if you crave more excitement. Jesup's about 28,000 people; friendly, laid back atmosphere. It's not too little- has a Super Wal Mart, technical college, federal prison, large paper mill, and a new hospital being built. Lots of nice places to live in town or in the country. Not much crime except drug dealers.

Nahunta is VERY small, only 1 traffic light. There are a few convenience stores, I think 1 grocery store and only 2 or 3 small, privately owned restaurants. You'd have to drive to Jesup or Brunswick for anything other than that. However, it's only 20-30 minutes to either, so if you don't have to go often, that would be ok. It's an older town, not much of anything new. If you want to be in the country I'd consider living on the outskirts of Jesup or Brunswick, instead.

We have explored Brunswick and I think parts of Jesup, but really didn't find anything we were interested in.
I took a ride today to get a feel for Nahunta and Waycross. Found enough shopping to appeaze me. I don't require much, although if I can find a good butcher, I will be happy. It only took me 15-20 min. to Waycross and 30-40 Brunswick.
What we liked about the area we found in Nahunta was the fact that it appearded a bit cleaner than other areas we looked at. The neighborhood, if you'd call it that (12 homes on approx. 30 acres) does have some requirements as far as upkeep on property. And it is horse friendly. One day I hope to have a horse.
That is one of my biggest "adjustments" I have had to make, the lack of.......
upkeep ??? If that is even what I am trying to say. Just seems like there isn't a local dump available. I have nothing against having "stuff", but when it comes to plain old garbage, I am uncomfortable.
I left S.Florida partly because of all the restrictions, and came to Georgia to change myself and my way of life, not to change Georgia. And it HAS been an adjustment, but not a horrible one.
In Florida, it would take me 20 minutes to get to the store because of traffic, as here in Georgia it is mostly highway driving. A big difference, and alot less stress.
We may give Nahunta a try, besides drive time, I really haven't seen too many negatives. Believe me, I am trying hard to weigh the differences, but the positives are overcoming the negatives.(I would just hate to break down on those highways, by myself or at night !) It will take some getting used to I am sure.

Nahunta (Brantley CO) really has nothing to offer, Jesup would be a more convenient place to live, putting you close to Brunswick (40 miles) and Savannah (65 miles), but to each their own.

Hello! I currently live in Texas and we are planning on moving to Georgia (hopefully within the next few months). I currently work as a Pharmacy Tech. and my husband works for a rail yard (switchman). I saw an opening for his job in Jesup,Ga. and was wondering what the town was like. (Here are a few more questions...) I was also wondering how far away it was from the Atlanta area. What colleges are located around Jesup (I am currently working towards a Early Education major (main focus Special Education)? We also have a little one that is about to start Kindergarten and was wondering about the schools there. ...I know it's alot, but I have been searching on the internet and it does not give me the personalized information I am looking for about the area. If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know a whole lot about Jesup though I've been through there a number of times and like the area. It's a small town and doesn't seem to have much going on. But since I don't know much, I could be completely wrong.

If you can tolerate an hour commute to Savannah for your early childhood degree, Armstrong Atlantic State University has a good education department. I'll investigate what is available in Brunswick.

Jesup is a long way from Atlanta, at least 5 hours. You'll be much closer to Jacksonville than anything for big shopping and entertainment purposes. It is a railroad hub. Seems I'm acquainted with a couple of folks who work for the railroad who go through there regularly.

Well I have lived in Jesup the majority of my life. It is a quaint small southern town. We do have a Wal-mart, Rayonier- a pulp mill, a prison, ATC- technical college, all of those are major employers in Wayne County.

There is definitely not a night life like was said. As well as, there are not a lot of nice eating restaurants. Shopping and nice restaurants are in Savannah a little over an hour away. Brunswick is growing and is about 45 min away. There is a small mall there and they just opened a Target and Old Navy. St Simons is the closest beach about an hour away, a few mins outside of Brunswick.

There are colleges in Statesboro: Georgia Southern University- about an hour and 10 mins away, Savannah- Armstrong, and Brunswick- Coastal Georgia Community College. I believe that the CGCC campus has programs for 4 year degrees through other Universities, although it is a 2 year school. I commuted my last year to Georgia Southern and only took Tues/Thur classes and it wasn't too bad.

Atlanta is like 4 1/2 hours, 4 if traffic is good. The backroads are the best way to get there.

The School System in Jesup is so so. It is improving, but Georgia in general is lacking in that department. I don't know how big class sizes are in other states but the classes usually are around 22-25 or so I think.
