It was the birthplace of Oliver Hardy, and every fall they have a look-a-like contest. We are going to go this year. Sounds like fun!

We just moved here in October of 2006....
They have some lovely events and it is quiet. Could be TOO quiet really! LOL
It seems to be a pretty good place to live. My kids are all in high school and they like Harlem High School. They made friends quickly. My kids said that the education is behind where they were.
We didn't have a choice but to move because my husband is in the Army and when we were looking for a house, we found several in Columbia county we liked, but the one here in Harlem was the nicest. New construction on a cul-de-sac.
I don't know much about Oliver Hardy but it's not because there aren't opportunities to learn. People seem friendly. Land is beautiful.
It is HOTTER than ****!! I have to admit but the winter was mild and the spring was beautiful.
If you are still deciding, I'd say that Harlem was a pretty nice and quiet place to live.
Good luck to you and your family, no matter where you decide to plant your roots. ~ Jessi

Hi! I am a HS Mom to 4 as well
Anyway, Harlem is a small town in West Columbia County. Not to much to do there. But it's just a short drive to Martinez/Evans for everything. The people are very friendly too!
Oliver Hardy festival is a lot of fun! It's gotten bigger every year! I am also a member of our local homeschool yahoo group. It links a lot of us together who homeschool. Feel free to email me with anymore info.

Harlem is a small town about 15mins from west augusta. You will have to drive to augusta or evans, mostly augusta to do things. I would move to west augusta, or south augusta in goshen or diamond lakes, or grovetown who is building a walmart its still as nice as evans but less traffic.

From the building of the Georgia Railroad which passes through town until at least the 1860s, Harlem was known as "Saw Dust, Georgia"... My mother and father live on Sawdust Rd in Harlem...it was called Saw Dust way back in the day because of the sawmill in town that coated the area with a layer of sawdust...
My family has been in Harlem since the late 1890's...going back to the Prather family...
Although there isn't much available as far as entertainment is concerned in Harlem...aside from the once a year Oliver Hardy festival downtown on Main Street...you can always take a drive to Thomson...Wal-Mart is fun after midnight...lol...or you can take a trip to Augusta. The surrounding area has tons to offer...The Regal 20 theater, loads of restaurants...bars on washington road...you could go to Appling to Mistletoe State Park, take a trip to Lincolnton to Elijah Clark State Park...ummm...let's just say that Harlem is a great place to live if you want peace and quiet...but it's a speed trap...so watch out for the rocket scientists in blue when you drive through town...
April in Augusta
