Well, I have lived in Albany, and then Leesburg for about 38 years. It used to be a pretty ok place to be. I myself am moving and simply cannot wait to leave. If you are moving to this area, you definately want Leesburg (Lee Co) over Albany (Dougherty). Lee county is one of the fastest growing counties in Ga. This is simply because of the exodus OUT of Albany. (Think Atlanta and the folks there moving to the suburbs.) I hate to say it, but there really is nothing here. There are some that are trying to revitalize the area - too little too late in my opinion. There is simply nothing for the younger crowd to do, and I think that is why alot of them get in trouble.
I have never been a victim of a crime. My parents have lived here as long as myself as well as my brother, and they have never been a victim of a crime. However, I think we are in the minority on that one. Probably you want to look into the Lake Park section of town in albany, or going out towards Dawson GA. There is also a good subdivision right down from Wal-mart, skating rink etc..
Albany is not THAT bad, but if you have ANY other places to go, I would look elsewhere. I really hate to think this way, and trust me, I have talked positive about Albany over the years, but to be honest......Go elsewhere if you can. I mean, it is ok if you HAVE to move here for a job, but I think you will be trying to transfer elsewhere - unless you are really pulling in the money. Alot of more affluent folks from albany have relocated to Lake Blackshear (close to Cordele GA). We have a lakehouse there and it is a beautiful area. Nothing to do unless you are content to enjoy the natural surroundings and fish, boat, ski, etc... which is wonderful. Lake blackshear is about 30-45 minutes away depending on which side of the river. One side is on the Sumter County side (Americus) and the other is Crisp Co (Cordele).
Don't get me wrong, Albany has a lot going for it...like.....well....I can't think of anything right now, but I will get back to you when I can! LOL Oh yeah....Radium Springs which is a beautiful natural spring...oops, not any more. They dropped the ball on that one. We use to all go down ther and swim and have a grand old time. There was an oldtime casino, which had been turned into a restaurant and changed hands several times. It actually burned and they rebuilt, but after the flood of 1994, (or could have been the next flood a few years later), with the government telling what could be built close to a body of water, how high it must be, etc...we lost Radium Springs as a private enterprise. I think they are supposed to make some sort of GA park or something out of it, but I havent seen anything yet. But hey, it's only been since over 10 years. Typical.
Like I said, been here a long time. Wish wish wish I could brag about all the good things it has to offer, but in my opinion (and I am no expert) with the population & size of Albany & Dougherty County, it should be leading the pack around here with lots & lots of great things. It simply does not.
STAY AWAY FROM EAST ALBANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
