Hi everyone! We are moving to Valdosta soon. One of our main interests is travel and tourism. When we get down there, we will be touring every county in South GA relatively south of Perry to the FL, over to the ocean , and over to the AL line. Within that region can someone provide me with insight as to the ten towns/cities in South GA that would be best avoided due to their lack of scenery, attractions, aesthetic purposes, crime, nastiness, etc?? We will also include the northern segment of Florida, west to Pensacola, east to ocean, and south to Gainesville/Alachua Co. Fell free to chime in regarding hidden gems we can find in that north Fla section too. Thanks for your help.

lemme think on this and get back to you.

the thing about it is, the areas with the most beautiful scenery will be unaccessible to you.

but a couple that come to mind are taking a plantation tour in thomasville, ga, a drive around chattahoochee, fl on the southern tip of lake seminole, and a ferry ride to cumberland island, ga. and i recommend a shallow draft boat ride around the same island.

If you like the coastal plain region, it is all very scenic. If you are expecting mountain scenery. you won't like it.

Well, I am not really that biased toward any type of topography that is scenic. Currently, here in south central, it is rather bland to take a ride anywhere up here. You see the same old unattractive land all the way to Philly or the shore. Not much variety up here. I do love wetland marsh areas like in Glynn. I am just unfamiliar a little, with that inland section of GA west from Brusnwick all the way to the AL line.

The plantations you mentioned will be very interesting. Do they have any, where women dress in those big southern belle dresses and the men are dressed like good mannered 'gentlemen'?

The Chattahoochee might be a nice diversion too. It seems o be a good ways away from big population. Is it very crowded there? Also, are there any gators in that lake area? One other thing would be nice too and that is if we can ride the roads through the deep country, and take our time, without having a million cell phone crazed people on our azzes trying to be a speed demon, going really nowhere fast. Is it a lot of traffic down there?

Eventually we will tour every county in the entire region I mentioned.

not on a regular basis; maybe for a special event.

If that sort of thing interests you, do not miss the Thomasville Victorian Christmas. Its another year away of course, but we always enjoy ourselves. Many locals will be outfitted in fine Victorian clothing. There is a rental company that comes to town a few weeks before the event, and anyone can rent an outfit for the evening.

Not at all.

Where there is water, there are gators. I've killed them in my own backyard; there is a creek that snakes through the woods that is maybe two feet deep. They're all over the place.

traffic around tallahassee is pretty thick; just stay in the county and you'll be fine.

there are a lot of canopy roads to drive through southern Thomas and northern Leon counties; even some within the city of Tallahassee.

The stretch right on the FL line from brooks county, ga to lake seminole is very nice. Lots of rolling hills and moss covered oaks. You just have to find a dirt road to make your way to it. You won't see much of it on the highways.

I'm confused; are you asking for the 10 best "don't miss" places in South Georgia? Or the worst? There's a lot of places in South Georgia worth visiting, but how somebody could tell you spots to avoid is difficult. Everyplace has something to offer, no matter how bland to the naked eye.

Your best bet is to go to the state welcome center on I-75 N at the Florida state line south of Valdosta and get a Georgia visitor guide -- the state puts out a large glossy magazine every year that's broken down by regions (Presidential Pathways, Magnolia Midlands. etc) and it is very detailed. Plus they have individual brochures on nearly every community in the state.

Off the top of my head, however, you definitely want to visit:
-- Thomasville for the historic homes and quaint downtown
-- Tifton for the Agrirama
-- Colquitt for Cloudland Canyon and Westville
-- Waycross for the Okefenokee Swamp (gators)
-- Plains for the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site
-- Andersonville for the National POW Museum
-- Americus for the Habitat for Humanity world headquarters
-- Albany for Radium Springs and the Flint River Aquarium

Newsboy list is a great one. I would add to the list - the islands on the Georgia coast. Each are beautiful and so different from each other. Jekyll, St Simons ,Sea Island and Tybee are easily accessable by driving over bridges. But others are not and require using a ferry and getting a permit like Cumberland and Sapalo (unless you have a private boat ) but boy are they worth seeing ( IMO). Absolutely beautiful.

Newboy and go falcons' have terrific ideas. I'd also consider:

Lumpkin - Westville and the Little Grand Canyon
Warm Springs - The Little White House and Callaway Gardens (this could be a tad north of the Perry line but not by far)

And if you're in Americus / Plains area, take the time to drive to Leslie (about 12 miles from Americus) and visit the Rural Telephone Museum.
