South Georgia is HOT in the summer. Atlanta is so crowded that if you wanted to actually live in the state of Georgia for some particular reason, I would live near the north Georgia line in the Chattanooga area. Here you would have the best of both worlds. If you are hunting a small town to actually live in, try Chickamauga. It's a charmer and you can be in downtown Chattanooga in 15 to 18 minutes. Ringgold is another option. You could be in East Brainerd ( a source of many jobs) in 10 or 15 minutes.

I think the difference between south Georgia and north Georgia can be summed up by looking at virtually any travel handbook for the state of Georgia (Frommers, Fodors, etc). Ninety percent of the book will be devoted to the coast, metro Atlanta, and points north of Atlanta. As for areas south of Atlanta, Savannah of course gets a healthy mention, as do the coastal areas and the Okefenokee swamp. Beyond that, you have a huge swath of the state that gets virtually no mention, with the limited exception of Macon and Valdosta. People visiting Georgia on vacation spend time in the north, particularly the mountains, Atlanta, or the coast. In south Georgia, many people live in small towns and they are just trying to get by and squeeze out a living. They don't worry about things like "walkable cities," the number of coffee shops, or quality of life. They worry about having food on their table and being able to pay their modest mortgage. If I were picking what area to live, between the two it would be north Georgia.

I guess when i say creepy looking areas i mean that in the south GA cities there are just so many parts of town which have got to be some of the scariest and most crime-ridden areas of GA. There are places where I wouldn't even want to stop for a stop sign for fear of being shot or carjacked. This mainly happens in places like Macon, Savannah, and Brunswick, but I have also seen it in smaller towns as well.

jhsrichards,
Thanks for the "creepy looking". It gave me a good laugh (and I can always use a good laugh).
O.k. Now, I know what you meant by "creepy"..."scary".
Frankly we try to stay away from cities except for DAYTIME shopping and then only when needed. As far as Macon goes, we only shop on the North side, but are very cautious there (using "the Club" etc.).

Valdosta is a fantastic metropolitan town with a great deal of opportunity. College town, you can golf about all year, you can get great property and homes for the money, and you are less than 3 hours from the GA coast, ATL, and the Gulf. I have lived in Athens, Albany, Atlanta, and Valdosta (2 times - college and now) I moved back to Valdosta 2 years ago from Atlanta. It all depends on where you are in your life. Additionally, South Ga has a great water supply which in my opinion, is most important.

I was raised in NW GA and lived in SW GA for almost 5 yrs. I can say that there are more things to see and do in N GA. You have the Blue Ridge Mtns and your so close to Chattanooga that you might as well stop by there too. Chattanooga has many many attractions and most of which are family oriented. There is something for everyone there. Literally.
