Default Oregon girl needs college advice- exchange trip

Hi everyone, I am a girl from Oregon looking to go on exchange next year, possibly to Georgia. I have narrowed it down to Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas.

The only school I have as an option in Georgia is the University of Georgia. WHat is your opinion on this? How friendly is this part of the state, and is it receptive to newcomers? Is Southern Hospitality evident?

I am in a pre-professional program, and since I will only be going for a term the only required class that I have left in my pre-reqs is Anatomy & Physiology. I plan on having a pretty light course load during my time here, because I got the majority of my heavy work out of the way. I just want to focus on meeting new people and seeing a part of the country I have never been to before. I am a good student, but am not really doing this exchange for a great educational experience, I just want to have new experiences and try things that are culturally different from Oregon. However, I would like to note I am not a "partier" but love meeting new people and sports/being active. Hope this helps a little bit with your answer And thanks for replying! I appreciate the opinion of people from the area because I can only gather so much from reading about places online. with accounts from people actually from the area, it helps me understand SO much more!

You will absolutely love Athens and UGA. It is one of the best college towns in the country. Great music scene. Tons of bars and events going on all of the time. Yes, southern hospitality is everywhere. UGA has a ton of history. Definitely worth looking into. If you have specific questions let me know. I graduated from there so I know the town well. Overall, it is the ultimate college town.

I went to UGA for 7 years. It is a wonderful place. The town is very college oriented and the downtown has a wonderful nightlife scene and there is always something to go do and the campus is beautiful. Most of these places will be pretty friendly to newcomers and have a piece of Southern hospitality in their own way. The town is semi-eclectic in its own way.

But you have a tough choice ... all those colleges are great... Although I would give an edge to UT-Austin and UGA. Both have a big vibrant music scene and plenty of bars. The ones in Athens are small and in old brick stores and it is really a cool place. You don't have to be a partier to enjoy of the places and enjoy hanging out with friends. There are lots of small places to go eat as well.

While you are down here you will definitely want to visit Atlanta, take a trip up to the Great Smokies, down to the beaches, and be sure to visit Savannah.

If you want to explore more I would suggest staying on the east coast, because you can visit the older unique places like Charleston and Savannah much easier. I would also suggest taking a longer drive down to New Orleans. Truly unique places in the South.

Yes the southern hospitality at uga is really evident, and there's nothing like a bulldog football game . Just remember the climates are completely different, I miss ga weather it was awesome all year long. Atlanta by the way in my opinion has more stuff to do than seattle or portland so enjoy it while your out there.

I currently live in Athens and would be more than happy to provide any advice or suggestions. I am from the midwest and have had no issues. In fact, I'd say most people seem to be "transplants" from somewhere else. Good luck.
