Uvalda: tiny, one-horse town with one payphone in an old general store and a bunch of churches.
Fitzgerald: Pretty little town with lots of trees and near the river.
Jennings FL: A popular stop on I-75 on Sundays, as it's the first exit past the GA line where you can beer.
Cordele: A smallish town trying to be big.
Albany: Best auto auction in the state.

If you are into the traditional Southern small town life, Fitzgerald isn't too bad. Fitzgerald has had the misfortune of losing several of its major industries over the last few years. The Delphi plant that made batteries for GM and others is no longer there. With it went probably the best paying jobs in the area. Shaw Industries also had major cutbacks in employment. Those were the two largest employers in Fitzgerald. Because of those two losses, the area as a whole has struggled economically, and as a result the development of the town has been stifled to an extent. Despite all that, Fitzgerald still has the potential of being a pretty good place to live once the economy turns around, and the local government leaders work on replacing the jobs that were lost with other good quality jobs.

Uvalda- not really too attractive either, what do you think. you get a sense about it having strange residents too, lol. not much to look at, you just wish you would soon arrive in wonderful Vidalia.

Fitzgerald-Sorry, i have to disagree. I really did not see much beauty in that place. The streets were pretty desolate and dead to say the least. The houses were not all that attractive, although there was a few off some side streets. Not many open or lively businesses. I'd hate to see what the 'other side of the tracks' neighborhood is like. Honestly the only thing that made me smile and even laugh was the wild chickens that roam freely thoughout town- now that i did enjoy ebcause it was very unique.

Cordele- a town with a swath of stores, restaurants, etc that caters a lot to travelers it appears. other than that it was one of thee ugliest towns I have seen. I would add scary also as there was many derelicts and people who appeared to be up to no good carrying beer down the street. Many run down houses in the town proper too. did not seem to have many attractions other than the train ride. It surprised me, I predicted it to be slightly pleasant and interesting similar to Tifton. Just left me very disappointed and not desiring to go back for anything.

Albany- I have 2 nice paid for cars so auto auction is not on tap currently. Nice spot downtown near Ray Charles and aquarium. Wasteland most of the rest especially on the south and west sides. Radium Springs was absolutely adorable. Chehaw overrated but gator exhibit scary and unique.

Jennings, FL- Can't say it is a popular stop, for I never see many people stopping at the fruit stand. Howver I may have to check the RV place out. A good thing is that it is a shortcut through scenic Hamilton County, away from Jasper. Jennings is really a half mile or so from the exit, the actual 'town' is anyway. Basically just a crossroads on 41 that looks very poor. Not many attractive houses, nor people(not saying that because they are mostly black either, so don't go there). In general kind of ugly.

Jasper, FL-you did not mention your opinion of that one Convextech. I wouldnt want to mention Jasper either, lol. Jasper was quite possibly the ugliest most uninteresting town that I have seen so far in South GA and North FL. It is supposed to be Hamiltons County seat too. Residents outside of Jasper and Jennings must be embarrassed that place rules their country. to be short, Jasper is just the ugliest and dirtiest town I have seen. Name some others you think could challenge it? If I have been to it then I'd still maybe disagree with you. Some towns between Albany and Thomasville or Tifton and Moultrie could give it a run though.

Hey Convextech after your response to what I discovered in those towns, could you tell me what you think of Adel, Baby and what your favorite small town (below 5000) is. Thank you.

I agree about Jasper, FL. My IL's moved there in 2003 from MD and we have no clue why..it's run down and terribly boring and far from things to do. There are break-ins in their neighborhood as well. The road (41) from Jasper to White Springs also seems like the longest road on Earth.

The best thing I could say about it was that I dropped a prescription off at the CVS there when visiting the IL's and it was done before I moved from the counter..that is about it!

Well, I am glad that someone agreed with me,lol. That place is like a post-war zone or something. We tried to tour the old jail that was supposedly a tourist attraction there and it was all bolted and locked up, looked like it had not been opened in years. I tell ya, if those prescriptions were pain pills, they probably were fast in getting them done because they knew exactly where they were from going to get them so often for the lowlife junkies there, that and they probably have a big supply of them for the many that sit on their porch 'nodding' out in Jasper. What a dump! I have not seen much worse, and I grew up in Baltimore- that is saying a lot about Jasper if you know about how bad Bmore is. Thanks for responding, you seem pleasant and interesting to talk to.

Don't really know anything about Jasper, Jennings, or Uvalda so I'll pass on them.

Fitzgerald- The loss of their major industries is really taking a toll on the city. It's stifling any potential economic development the city needs to be viable. Outside of Walmart, a few other national chains, and a couple of local boutiques, most businesses are hard pressed to survive. The housing stock is aged, much of it dating to the very early 20th century, and it's showing its wear and tear. A Lowes or Home Depot could make a mint. However, there are some very nice neighborhoods on the fringes. To be honest, most all of the older neighborhoods in Fitzgerald look like the "other side of the track". I will admit that the older African American neighborhoods do tend to be a little more deteriorated than the others. I personally think that it makes the city look like a country hick town to have wild chickens running around. 50% of the residents agree with me, 50% don't.

Cordele- Other than the strip of restaurants and retail along US 280 right off the expressway, a pretty depressing, slummy place.

Albany - Other than the aquarium, Ray Charles monument, Chehaw, Radium Springs, and the general area around the mall, it's also a pretty depressing place. Albany seems to have a serious issue with crime.

Well, it appears another person agrees with me for the most part. I was beginning to think that I was seeing the wrong things for awhile when so many was disagreeing with me in other threads. I guess I am not nuts after all . I did say I liked the wild chickens too though, I sort of like downtown Fitz. a little but it was analogous to a ghost town. I seen more action in the nasty sections if you call hanging in a big group and hollering to be action, lol.

Fitzgerald does have a large downtown for a city of its size. It just harkens back to the pre-interstate era when the railroad was the primary means of travel. If the economy was stronger, it could be a very vibrant area.

Another issue with Fitzgerald and its lack of growth and progress, too much corruption in local government.

Thanks for the insight on Fitzgerald. Its location is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, only a few slightly used U.S. routes go through it and it is like 20 miles from the interstate. Even small little Ashburn is livelier. Now just down the road , in Ocilla, that is definitely some scary looking territory.
